University of Toronto professor, a former Ontario deputy minister of education, arrested on child pornography charges

Toronto police arrested a University of Toronto professor and former deputy minster of education following a child exploitation investigation.

Benjamin Levin, 61, was arrested at his home on Monday in the Lawrence Avenue West and Avenue Road area. Police have charged Levin with two counts of distributing child pornography, making child pornography, counseling to commit and indictable offence and sexual offence against a child under 16 years of age.

Levin is a professor and research chair in education and leadership at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto. He was named a member of Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne?s transition team in January.

According to his webpage on the OISE website, Levin was deputy minister in the department of education for the province of Manitoba from Nov. 1999 to Sept. 2002 before becoming deputy minister of education for the province of Ontario for two years.

Levin holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Manitoba and a Master of Education degree from Harvard University.

Levin is expected to appear at Toronto courthouse on Monday at 2 p.m.
