Do You Have the Compulsion to Take Notes? | World of Psychology

Do You Have the Compulsion to Take Notes? One of my Secrets of Adulthood is: People are more alike than we think, and we?re less alike than we think.

For instance, for years, I thought that my habit of constant note-taking was quite peculiar. But since I?ve written about my love of note-taking I?ve discovered that many people share this passion.

In her essay ?On Keeping a Notebook,? in Slouching Towards Bethlehem, Joan Didion describes this drive:

The impulse to write things down is a peculiarly compulsive one, inexplicable to those who do not share it, useful only accidentally, only secondarily, in the way that any compulsion tries to justify itself.

She?s right to use the word ?compulsion.? I don?t have to push myself to take notes? I have to stop myself from taking too many notes.

I use a very loose method of organization. For my major topics, such as ?happiness? or ?Churchill,? I keep a single, giant, dedicated document. I add all relevant notes there, along with subject tags so that I can find the note later. I also have a document called ?Notes? where I keep notes that don?t belong in any particular place.

For quotes, I have one document for general quotes; the other for happiness-related quotes, which I use for the?Moment of Happiness, my daily emails of happiness quotes.? (If you want to get a daily happiness quote by email, sign up here.)

I love having a chance to make use of the quotes I love; I wish I knew how to make use of my giant trove of non-happiness-related quotes.

For notes related to books I?m writing, I?ve wondered whether I should organize my notes better, but I do find that the action or scrolling through them and seeing odd juxtapositions of ideas helps to stimulate my own ideas and creativity.

I worry that if I kept the notes in a highly structured way, I might lose some of these benefits.

?How about you?
Do you share this compulsion to take notes? How do you organize them?

2 Stocks That Could Soar On Potential Acquisition | Stock Tips ...

San Diego, Oct.31, swing trading .- ?A?rumor?that?Microsoft (MSFT)?is interested in acquiring?Netflix (NFLX)drove the video streaming company up 13% in the latter half of the trading day on Friday. The rumor seems largely unfounded; nonetheless, the market loved the idea. I believe a buyout is a good idea, but is still rather unlikely for the time being.
Earlier this month, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings?announced?that he would resign from Microsoft's board. Many saw this as a precursor to a potential Microsoft acquisition. Hastings does not officially leave the board until the end of November, when Microsoft conducts its annual shareholders meeting. A buyout will have to wait until then.

So why should Microsoft consider buying Netflix? I believe the market severely undervalues Netflix, even with its recent price hike. Additionally, Netflix would allow Microsoft to compete in the huge market for online video. Finally, Netflix will improve Microsoft's internet business segment.

Netflix is the market leader in internet video streaming. Just 15 months ago, the stock was flying high priced at levels near $300. The fall back down was quick and painful as bad news and earnings convinced more and more investors to sell. Rising costs have depressed earnings significantly in the last year.

Two significant costs affected Netflix's expenses over the past two years. First, content costs rose significantly last year. While bad for Netflix's bottom line, increased content prices create a higher barrier of entry and affect competitors similarly.

Second, Netflix spent significant amounts on expanding abroad. Netflix is now available in all of North America, all of South America, the UK, Ireland, and most recently all of Scandinavia. Spending money to grow the company abroad cut into earnings, but sets up the company for much higher future profits and revenues.

Certainly, Netflix has shot itself in the foot once or twice (a la Qwikster), but it is still ubiquitous with streaming video online. Its most recent earnings report showed better than expected profits and revenue, but the stock fell because of slow subscriber growth. Global expansion will improve growth and earnings, which is why I believe the market is still undervaluing Netflix at $69 per share and presents Microsoft with a good price, even with a premium, to buy a controlling portion.?...?Continue to read.

New study brings a doubted exoplanet 'back from the dead'

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? A second look at data from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope is reanimating the claim that the nearby star Fomalhaut hosts a massive exoplanet. The study suggests that the planet, named Fomalhaut b, is a rare and possibly unique object that is completely shrouded by dust.

Fomalhaut is the brightest star in the constellation Piscis Austrinus and lies 25 light-years away.

In November 2008, Hubble astronomers announced the exoplanet, named Fomalhaut b, as the first one ever directly imaged in visible light around another star. The object was imaged just inside a vast ring of debris surrounding but offset from the host star. The planet's location and mass -- no more than three times Jupiter's -- seemed just right for its gravity to explain the ring's appearance.

Recent studies have claimed that this planetary interpretation is incorrect. Based on the object's apparent motion and the lack of an infrared detection by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, they argue that the object is a short-lived dust cloud unrelated to any planet.

A new analysis, however, brings the planet conclusion back to life.

"Although our results seriously challenge the original discovery paper, they do so in a way that actually makes the object's interpretation much cleaner and leaves intact the core conclusion, that Fomalhaut b is indeed a massive planet," said Thayne Currie, an astronomer formerly at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., and now at the University of Toronto.

The discovery study reported that Fomalhaut b's brightness varied by about a factor of two and cited this as evidence that the planet was accreting gas. Follow-up studies then interpreted this variability as evidence that the object actually was a transient dust cloud instead.

In the new study, Currie and his team reanalyzed Hubble observations of the star from 2004 and 2006. They easily recovered the planet in observations taken at visible wavelengths near 600 and 800 nanometers, and made a new detection in violet light near 400 nanometers. In contrast to the earlier research, the team found that the planet remained at constant brightness.

The team attempted to detect Fomalhaut b in the infrared using the Subaru Telescope in Hawaii, but was unable to do so. The non-detections with Subaru and Spitzer imply that Fomalhaut b must have less than twice the mass of Jupiter.

Another contentious issue has been the object's orbit. If Fomalhaut b is responsible for the ring's offset and sharp interior edge, then it must follow an orbit aligned with the ring and must now be moving at its slowest speed. The speed implied by the original study appeared to be too fast. Additionally, some researchers argued that Fomalhaut b follows a tilted orbit that passes through the ring plane.

Using the Hubble data, Currie's team established that Fomalhaut b is moving with a speed and direction consistent with the original idea that the planet's gravity is modifying the ring.

"What we've seen from our analysis is that the object's minimum distance from the disk has hardly changed at all in two years, which is a good sign that it's in a nice ring-sculpting orbit," explained Timothy Rodigas, a graduate student in the University of Arizona and a member of the team.

Currie's team also addressed studies that interpret Fomalhaut b as a compact dust cloud not gravitationally bound to a planet. Near Fomalhaut's ring, orbital dynamics would spread out or completely dissipate such a cloud in as little as 60,000 years. The dust grains experience additional forces, which operate on much faster timescales, as they interact with the star's light.

"Given what we know about the behavior of dust and the environment where the planet is located, we think that we're seeing a planetary object that is completely embedded in dust rather than a free-floating dust cloud," said team member John Debes, an astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Md.

A paper describing the findings has been accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Because astronomers detect Fomalhaut b by the light of surrounding dust and not by light or heat emitted by its atmosphere, it no longer ranks as a "directly imaged exoplanet." But because it's the right mass and in the right place to sculpt the ring, Currie's team thinks it should be considered a "planet identified from direct imaging."

Fomalhaut was targeted with Hubble most recently in May by another team. Those observations are currently under scientific analysis and are expected to be published soon.

Rumor: New Nexus tablet to have higher resolution display than iPad

4 hrs.

Lately rumors are a penny a dozen when it comes to Google's Nexus phone and tablet lineup, but one in particular certainly caught our attention: An analyst claims that the next Nexus tablet will be a 10.1-inch beast with a higher resolution display than the current iPad model.

According to CNET's Brooke Crothers, Richard Shim, an analyst at NPD DisplaySearch,?says that the pixel density on Google's next tablet will leave that of the "Retina" display found on the third-generation 9.7-inch iPad in the dust.

This new Nexus tablet, apparently?built by Samsung, would have a?2,560?x?1,600 pixel?display with a resolution of 299 pixels per inch (PPI), according to Shim.?The iPad, in comparison, has a 2048 x 1536 pixel display with a resolution of 264 PPI.

(Both?Samsung and Apple have?phones with higher pixel densities than this, of course. The iPhone 5 screen has a 326 PPI, while the Galaxy S III offers 306 PPI.)?

Shim told CNET that the new Nexus tablet will be a "high-end device," so think $400 or $500,?rather than?the ?sub-$200 range of the Nexus 7 and the rumored $99 Google?tablet. Samsung, which already builds Google's current Galaxy Nexus smartphone, makes sense as the choice of partner.?

Shim bases all of his assumption on "supply chain indications," which, as we've learned in the past, are subject to change ??or occasionally totally wrong. So take all of these details with a hefty serving of salt until there's some sort of official confirmation or announcement from the folks at Google themselves.

10 Colleges With the Highest Freshman Retention Rates

The U.S. News Short List, separate from our overall rankings, is a regular series that magnifies individual data points in hopes of providing students and parents a way to find which undergraduate or graduate programs excel or have room to grow in specific areas. Be sure to explore The Short List: College and The Short List: Grad School to find data that matters to you in your college or grad school search.

The transition from high school to higher education can be difficult to navigate, leading many college freshmen to not return to campus for their sophomore year. Some students drop out completely--for personal, financial, or academic reasons. Others transfer schools to find a better fit.

[Learn who to get to know on campus.]

Researching freshman retention rates--the percentage of first year students who return the following year--can give prospective students valuable insight into how new students fare at a particular college or university.

Among the 1,377 ranked schools that reported freshman retention data to U.S. News during the 2012 annual survey, the average retention rate is 75 percent. Those rates reflect the four-year average of incoming freshmen between fall 2007 and fall 2010 who returned to campus the following fall.

At some of the most elite institutions, however, nearly all first year students returned the following year. Both Columbia University in New York City and Yale University in New Haven, Conn., boasted 99 percent retention rates for their freshman classes between 2007 and 2010.

[Get tips for starting college on the right foot.]

Of the 10 colleges and universities with the highest freshman retention rates, five landed in the top five of the 2013 Best Colleges rankings. The lowest-ranked school on the list, Harvey Mudd College in California, ranked 12th among National Liberal Arts Colleges in the 2013 rankings.

Schools that were designated by U.S. News as Unranked were not considered for this report. U.S. News did not calculate a numerical ranking for Unranked programs because the program did not meet certain criteria that U.S. News requires to be numerically ranked.

The following schools had the highest freshman retention rates, based on data covering first year students entering college between fall 2007 and fall 2010:

School name (state) Freshman retention rate (2007-10) U.S. News rank and category
Columbia University (NY) 99% 4, National Universities
Yale University (CT) 99% 3, National Universities
University of Chicago 98.3% 4, National Universities
Amherst College (MA) 98% 2, National Liberal Arts Colleges
California Institute of Technology 98% 10, National Universities
Harvey Mudd College (CA) 98% 12, National Liberal Arts Colleges
Princeton University (NJ) 98% 1, National Universities
Stanford University (CA) 98% 6, National Universities
Dartmouth College (NH) 97.8% 10, National Universities
University of Pennsylvania 97.8% 8, National Universities

Don't see your school in the top 10? Access the U.S. News College Compass to find information about freshman retention, as well as complete rankings and much more.

U.S. News surveyed more than 1,800 colleges and universities for our 2012 survey of undergraduate programs. Schools self-reported a myriad of data regarding their academic programs and the makeup of their student body, among other areas, making U.S. News's data the most accurate and detailed collection of college facts and figures of its kind. While U.S. News uses much of this survey data to rank schools for our annual Best Colleges rankings, the data can also be useful when examined on a smaller scale. U.S. News will now produce lists of data, separate from the overall rankings, meant to provide students and parents a means to find which schools excel, or have room to grow, in specific areas that are important to them. While the data come from the schools themselves, these lists are not related to, and have no influence over, U.S. News's rankings of Best Colleges or Best Graduate Schools. The freshman retention data above are correct as of Oct. 10, 2012.

(AP) ? Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and American Express are rolling out a prepaid card that they say offers unique services designed to help shoppers manage and control their everyday finances.

The two companies said Monday that Bluebird, begun during a pilot program late last year, acts like a checking account but without the fees that have increasingly frustrated shoppers. It will have no minimum balance and no monthly, annual or overdraft fees. They say the only fees that will be associated with the card will be transparent and within the user's control, such as out of network ATM withdrawals by consumers who don't use direct deposit.

Instead, what Bluebird will be loaded with is a number of features, including the ability to deposit a check to one's Bluebird account by simply taking a picture with a smart phone. It will also offer the same fraud protections in an event the card is stolen or lost as other standard cards.

The move comes as American Express is looking for new ways to expand its customer base beyond its traditional wealthy clientele. For Wal-Mart, the Bluebird service is the latest financial product offering to be pushed by the world's largest retailer, but it's also the most comprehensive.

Bluebird's rollout also signals how competition for pre-paid cards, once the domain of non-bank companies, is heating up.

Wal-Mart and American Express say Bluebird was improved since the pilot test, based on feedback from consumers who said they were bothered by rising fees related to checking accounts and debit services.

"We are recreating and reimagining what checking and banking services might look like in the 21st century," said Dan Schulman, group president, Enterprise Growth at American Express in an interview with The Associated Press. He said the partnership with Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, aims to set up a "moral equivalent of a bank branch at retail."

"Our customers tell us that they're tired of navigating a complex maze of do's and don'ts to avoid the ever growing list of fees found on checking products," Daniel Eckert, vice president of financial services for Walmart U.S., said in a statement.

Deborah Weinswig, an analyst at Citi Research, said that the offering will resonate well with Wal-Mart shoppers, as only about 15 percent of the company's sales are paid for with a credit card. Bluebird "could drive increased mindshare and incremental traffic over time," Weinswig wrote in a report published Monday.

Prepaid cards are a fast-growing segment of the payments industry. While the cards are aimed mainly at people who don't have bank accounts or whose credit ratings are damaged, they also are becoming popular with consumers seeking to avoid surprise bank fees and keep from accumulating credit card balances.

But prepaid cards are typically not linked to a checking account. Monday's announcement shows how the financial service landscape is changing in light of the rising popularity of smart phones and other technological advances, and evolving needs of consumers, who want on-the-go financial services.

Wal-Mart is not new to the prepaid card segment, as it already offers prepaid cards from Green Dot Corp. During a call with reporters, Eckert said that Walmart has no plans to end its relationship with Green Dot in light of its new partnership with American Express. The discounter has a contract with the Monrovia, Calif., company that expires in 2015. He says Wal-Mart is just broadening its assortment of financial services to serve more customers.

Green Dot depends on Wal-Mart for more than 60 percent of its revenue. The news sent the shares of the Monrovia, Calif.-based company plunging in Monday trading.

Bluebird cards can be used at millions of locations where American Express cards are accepted, both in the U.S. and internationally. Users can deposit funds onto the card via direct deposit, with cash at any Walmart register, or by linking a checking, savings or debit card to the account.

Another key feature: the user can set up sub-accounts for family members or others, giving them access to certain funds, instead of the entire account. So parents could set up such accounts using Bluebird for their children in college.

Madeline Aufseeser, senior analyst at research firm Aite Group, said that what makes this unique is that there are lots of features that come with the account.

"It's just a further indication that pre-paid (cards) have gone mainstream," she said.

Wal-Mart and American Express said that more features will be added to Bluebird in the first quarter of 2013. These features will include more options to deposit money and check-writing capabilities.

Bluebird will be available next week at www.bluebird.com and in more than 4,000 Walmart stores.

Shares of Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart added 13 cents to close Monday trading at $75.26. Shares of American Express, which is based in New York, gained 22 cents to end at $58.78.

Green Dot shares dropped fell $2.618, or 20.3 percent, to close at $10.24.

94% Looper

All Critics (218) | Top Critics (41) | Fresh (204) | Rotten (14)

The reasoning behind all this may not reward prolonged inspection, but Johnson is smart enough to press onward with his plot, leaving us with neither the time nor the desire to linger over the logic ...

Writer-director Rian Johnson establishes himself as an original talent who clearly believes storytelling must prevail.

A mind-bending ride that is not afraid to slow down now and again, to explore themes of regret and redemption, solitude and sacrifice, love and loss. It's a movie worth seeing and, perhaps, going back to see again.

Looper has more heart than Brick and the 2008 con-man flick The Brothers Bloom. Both fine achievements, they could also be described as viscerally cerebral.

I'm a sucker for time-travel movies.

Looper felt to me like a maddening near-miss ...

Doesn't quite reach the heights of the lofty ideals that it so ardently seeks to expound, but makes up for this with the sheer thrill of the journey Rian Johnson takes us on.

Ingenious with a fine performance by Emily Blunt, but far too much cold-blooded violence.

Engaging, exciting, and successfully cross-breeding elements of Terminator and even Pet Sematary, Looper is a solid work of palatable science-fiction.

Looper's super. An action-thriller that bothers to have a brain.

Looper may not take us back to the future as satisfyingly as Robert Zemeckis' Marty McFly trilogy or James Cameron's Terminator franchise, but writer-director Rian Johnson does enough right to all but guarantee that he has a future cult film on the books.

The best time travel films play on emotion rather than logic, and once Looper realises this and drops all the tail-chasing about how time travel works it settles into the engrossing action/drama about destiny it should have been from the get go.

Has more depth, smarts, and heart than the usual sci-fi bluster.

A just about brilliant sci-fi crime-drama-thriller mostly set in the years 2044 and 2074. Rian Johnson is a rare director who creates entertainment with depth.

The key to enjoying the gruesome violence mixed with a healthy potion of emotional depth rarely found in this genre is to not dwell on the fiction in the science.

Sometimes time travel is just used a cheap device in movies to make them seem different; this is not one of those films. It's genuinely unique and fresh.

Very entertaining on many, many levels.

The best kind of light entertainment that expects you to be just as intelligent as it is.

It's complex enough that sci-fi fans can dig deeper over multiple viewings, but thrilling enough that casual viewers can take it all in with one watch.

...an above-average sci-fi tale.

Rian Johnson makes a loud, dark, highly stylized film that looks good but whose ideas do not really bear close examination.

Time travel makes sense in Looper because writer-director Rian Johnson keeps it on a short leash, not requiring enough manufactured logic to trip over later.

I don't know where you guys found that kid... Was it the same lab where they grew the Fannings?

Besides a challenging time-travel premise, a dark sense of humor, and some thrilling action scenes, Looper has the kind emotional weight that you wouldn't expect.

... Writer-director Rian Johnson never stops working, using the science-fiction setup and trappings to delve into the characters and give us a story with some real meat.

You don't need time-travel to spot a future cult classic.

Tunisia calls for migrant crisis task force

VALLETTA (Reuters) - Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki called on Saturday for the creation of a regional task force to deal with the "humanitarian disaster" which has killed thousands of desperate African migrants trying to reach Europe in small, unseaworthy boats.

Speaking at the conclusion of a meeting of European and north African leaders in Malta, Marzouki said the task force would have to coordinate work already being done by foreign and interior ministries as well as regional bodies.

"We don't want this to be a military operation, we want this to be a humanitarian operation," he said. "We cannot accept having hundreds and thousands of people drowning in the sea."

But he warned that a solution to the problem at the heart of the crisis, instability, persistent poverty and destructively high youth unemployment in Africa, was still a distant prospect.

"We need time, we cannot do miracles in a few months," he told a news conference at the end of the meeting.

"Independent systems have been badly damaged, the security system, the health system, the judiciary system have all been badly damaged," he said.

The succession of small, overcrowded migrant boats that still attempt the dangerous crossing from north Africa to Sicily, Malta and other islands has long reflected the pressure being created by poverty in the region.

While the problem is now less intense since Western governments stepped up cooperation with North African countries in the wake of the Arab spring revolutions, migrant boats still regularly show up in southern Europe. As recently as last month, dozens of people are believed to have died when a boat sank near Lampedusa off Sicily.

Marzouki's comments underlined the pressing desire of the newly established governments in countries like Libya and Tunisia for support from the European Union as well as worries in Europe about the potential spread of instability.

The killing of U.S. ambassador Christopher Stevens in Libya and the sacking of the U.S. Embassy in Tunis last month in protests over an anti-Islamic video provided a sharp reminder of how fragile the situation remains in the region.

5+5 MEETING

The first meeting of leaders from the so-called 5+5 group of countries since the "Arab spring" revolutions, produced few concrete decisions and was billed mainly as a forum for dialogue between countries in the western Mediterranean.

Algeria, France, Italy, Libya, Malta, Mauritania, Morocco, Portugal, Spain and Tunisia form an informal smaller group of countries alongside the 43-member Union for the Mediterranean launched by former French President Nicolas Sarkozy in 2008.

With the southern European countries struggling to stave off their worst financial crisis since World War Two, there was little prospect of any immediate financial assistance from the meeting in Malta on Friday and Saturday.

On the European side, interest was divided between the tantalizing but still distant hope of creating a stable, prosperous region across the Mediterranean and the immediate problem of containing instability.

"If we can succeed in avoiding a transformation of the Arab spring into an Arab autumn or even a freezing winter, that will be a great investment in the European economy," Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti said.

A statement issued after the meeting condemned the violence in Syria and called for broader cooperation across the region.

Egypt: At least 21 troops killed in Sinai accident

EL-ARISH, Egypt (AP) ? A troop carrier overturned on a mountain road in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula early Monday, killing at least 21 members of the security forces stationed on the border with Israel, officials said.

Health Ministry official Tarek Khater said the driver of the vehicle was speeding downhill on the badly maintained single-lane road as he transported members of the paramilitary Central Security Forces along the borderline. A security official says the high number of casualties resulted from the vehicle rolling several times.

Khater says another 11 were injured, several in critical condition. A security official said 24 were hurt. He retracted an earlier estimate of 48 injured. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the press.

It was a different part of the Sinai from where the military is conducting a sweep against Islamic militants.

Traffic accidents are common in Egypt due to poor road maintenance and spotty enforcement of traffic laws. Police estimate they kill about 6,000 people annually.

(AP) ? His blood could boil. His lungs could overinflate. The vessels in his brain could burst. His eyes could hemorrhage.

And, yes, he could break his neck while jumping from a mind-boggling altitude of 23 miles.

But the risk of a gruesome death has never stopped "Fearless Felix" Baumgartner in all his years of skydiving and skyscraper leaping, and it's not about to now.

Next Monday over New Mexico, he will attempt the highest, fastest free fall in history and try to become the first skydiver to break the sound barrier.

"So many unknowns," Baumgartner says, "but we have solutions to survive."

The 43-year-old former military parachutist from Austria is hoping to reach 690 mph, or Mach 1, after leaping from his balloon-hoisted capsule over the desert near Roswell.

He will have only a pressurized suit and helmet for protection as he tries to go supersonic 65 years after Chuck Yeager, flying an experimental rocket plane, became the first human to go faster than the speed of sound.

Doctors, engineers and others on Baumgartner's Red Bull-sponsored team have spent as much as five years studying the risks and believe they have done everything possible to bring him back alive. He has tested out his suit and capsule in two dress rehearsals, jumping from 15 miles in March and 18 miles in July.

Baumgartner will be more than three times higher than the cruising altitude of jetliners when he hops, bunny-style, out of the capsule and into a near-vacuum where there is barely any oxygen and less than 1 percent of the air pressure on Earth.

If all goes well, he will reach the speed of sound in about half a minute at an altitude of around 100,000 feet. Then he will start to slow as the atmosphere gets denser, and after five minutes of free fall, he will pull his main parachute. The entire descent should last 15 to 20 minutes.

He will be rigged with cameras that will provide a live broadcast of the jump via the Internet, meaning countless viewers could end up witnessing a horrific accident.

Baumgartner is insistent on going live with his flight.

"We want to share that with the world," he says. "It's like landing on the moon. Why was that live?"

His team of experts ? including the current record-holder from a half-century ago, Joe Kittinger, now 84 ? will convene inside a NASA-style Mission Control in the wee hours Monday for the liftoff of the helium balloon at sunrise.

"All the things that can happen are varying degrees of bad," offers Baumgartner's top medical man, Dr. Jonathan Clark, a former NASA flight surgeon.

Clark was married to space shuttle astronaut Laurel Clark, who was killed aboard Columbia while it was returning to Earth in 2003, and he has dedicated himself to improving astronauts' chances of survival in a high-altitude disaster.

NASA is paying close attention, eager to improve its spacecraft and spacesuits for emergency escape, but is merely an observer; the energy drink maker is footing the bill and will not say how much it is costing.

The No. 1 fear is a breach of Baumgartner's suit.

If it breaks open ? if, say, he bangs into the capsule while jumping or supersonic shock waves batter him ? potentially lethal bubbles could form in his bodily fluids. That's what's known as boiling blood. A Soviet military officer died in 1962 after jumping from a balloon at 86,000 feet; the visor of his helmet hit the gondola and cracked.

During the descent, the temperature could be as low as minus 70. Baumgartner's suit will be all he has between his body and the extreme cold.

Then there's the risk of a flat spin, in which Baumgartner loses control of his body during the free fall and starts spinning. A long, fast spin, if left unchecked, could turn his eyeballs into blood-soaked, reddish-purple orbs, and he could be left temporarily blind. Also, a massive blood clot could form in his brain.

A small stabilizing chute will automatically deploy if he goes into a flat spin and blacks out or otherwise becomes incapacitated. He also has an emergency chute that will automatically deploy if he is unable to pull the cord on his main chute.

Baumgartner's team has a plan for every contingency but one: If the balloon ruptures shortly after liftoff because of a gust of wind or something else, the capsule will come crashing down with him inside. He won't have time to blow the hatch and bail out.

"I have every expectation that he'll come through this successfully based on our analysis," Clark says, "but you know, it still is an unknown."

Kittinger leapt from an open gondola on Aug. 16, 1960, from an altitude of 19.5 miles and reached 614 mph, or Mach 0.9 ? records that stand to this day. He was a captain in the Air Force, and the military's Excelsior project was a test bed for the nation's young space program.

Kittinger has been Baumgartner's mentor, signing on with this new project after decades of refusing others' requests.

Fearless Felix insists he would not attempt the jump if the odds were against him.

"I think they underestimate the skills of a skydiver," says Baumgartner, who has made more than 2,500 jumps from planes, helicopters, landmarks and skyscrapers, with no serious injuries.

If he makes it back in one piece, Baumgartner plans on settling down with his girlfriend and flying helicopters in the U.S. and Austria, performing mountain rescues and firefighting.

"After this," he promises, "I'm going to retire because I've been successfully doing things for the last 25 years and I'm still alive."

I'm Sorry, Steve Jobs: We Could Have Saved You

I'm Sorry, Steve Jobs: We Could Have Saved You

Siddhartha Mukherjee in Newsweek:

SidWe are failing to treat and prevent cancer?even as the promise of life-saving remedies await us. On the anniversary of Steve Jobs?s death, leading oncologist and the author of The Emperor of All Maladies Siddhartha Mukherjee explains how we failed to save an icon and why we will lose so many more lives if we do not give cancer research the funding it deserves. In Oct. 5, the night that Steve Jobs died, I ascended 30,000 feet into the thin air above New York on a flight to California. On my lap was a stash of scientific papers. I was reading and taking notes?where else??on an iPad.

Jobs?s death?like a generational Rorschach test?had provoked complex reactions within each of us. There was grief in abundance, of course, admixed with a sense of loss, with desolation and nostalgia. Outside the Apple store in SoHo, New York, that evening, there were bouquets of white gerberas and red roses. Someone had left a bushel of apples by the doorstep and a sign that read ?I-miss ...? I missed Jobs, too?but I also felt a personal embarrassment in his death. I am an oncologist and a cancer researcher. I felt as if my profession, my discipline, and my generation had let him down. Steve Jobs had promised?and then delivered?life-altering technologies. Had we, in all honesty, given him any such life-altering technologies back? I ask the question in all earnestness. Jobs?s life ended because of a form of pancreatic cancer called pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor, or PNET. These tumors are fleetingly rare: about five in every million men and women are diagnosed with PNETs each year. Deciphering the biology of rare cancers is often challenging. But the past five years have revealed extraordinary insights into the biology of some rare cancers?and PNETs, coincidentally enough, have led part of that charge. By comparing several such tumors, scientists are beginning to understand the biology of these peculiar tumors.

EPCOT Center - The Symbol of A Failed Cultural Movement

Epcot Center: Since the park's conception, it has been a top name in innovation and technology. It is one of the most visited theme parks in the world and will continue to be just that: a theme park. Little do guests know of the crushed potential for the area that died along with Walt Disney.

The park's name stands for Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, a name that was given to the project by Disney in its early stages. His hope with the park was to create a utopian society that would have engulfed the entire property of Walt Disney World in Florida. He wished to have a city that was self-sufficient and capable of growing its own food in a sustainable manner. It was meant as a place where inhabitants could live separately from the surrounding communities.

The park is modeled after the ideals laid out by the original city plans, and has been described as a permanent Worlds Fair. At over 300 acres, EPCOT is more than twice the size of the Magic Kingdom.

"EPCOT ... will take its cue from the new ideas and new innovation and technology that are now emerging fromthe creative centers of American industry. It will be a community oftomorrow that will never be completed, but will always be introducingand testing and demonstrating new materials andsystems. And EPCOT will always be a showcase to the world for the ingenuity and imagination of American freeenterprise." - Walt Disney

The people mover ride, for example, which is a continuous transportation system, relying on the movement of the track rather than motors in the vehicles, would have been the city's main form of transportation and work together with the monorail system. No cars would have been allowed downtown, preventing accidents and promoting pedestrian safety. Main roads for delivery trucks and cars entering and leaving the city would be located underground, preventing traffic congestion and keeping inhabitants from seeing the behind the scenes work. No one in the city would be unemployed, eliminating slums and ghettos. The Worlds Showcase was also an original part of his concept. It was meant to be a shopping and recreation area where one could taste the cultures of different lands to promote learning, acceptance and diversity.

The project was a massive undertaking, and Disney was denied funding until he finished building The Magic Kingdom. He died before the park ever opened and with him, the dream of his city was extinguished. Those left behind to carry on his work didn't have the same vision for the area, and didn't feel capable of running a city without him.

It makes one wonder; if Walt had succeeded, Disney World would be a giant community, excelling in science, innovation, and technology. Sustainable living is now an important goal the country is trying to reach, and Disney was ahead of his time with his ideas of making that dream come true. How would this project have changed the world? Would it have been a success?

The city was to be a model only; an experiment that once successful could spread all over the country, and finally the world. Celebration, Florida is a community owned by the Disney Corporation that seemingly fulfills Walt's dream. However, the city is based on new urbanism, a system that differs greatly from his ideas of futurism and modernism. New urbanism does have close ties to environmentalism, with the emphasis being on walk able neighborhoods: areas with jobs, shopping and doctors close enough to walk, promoting a healthier lifestyle not dependant on vehicular transportation. This is a way to get back to what living communities were like a long time ago, fixing the problems that have led to the unhealthy and energy consuming neighborhoods of contemporary society.

However, what Walt Disney wanted was a modern, futurist approach. Modernism rejects tradition and invents new ways of doing things. It does not revert back to the traditions that have failed in the past. Strong lines, anti-historicism and a sense of urgency mark futurist architecture. The art of this movement suggests speed, motion, and a constant push into the future; in contrast to the slow paced neighborhoods that make up Celebration. Both Epcot Center and Celebration are a mere taste of what could have been had Disney's genius been allowed to flourish among the commercialism of theme parks and gift shops. As the park approaches its 30th year, Disney World celebrates their achievements with guests, knowing that what has been done, though impressive and successful, is only a fraction of what was possible.
