Sun, sand, closing arguments: Travel and Leisure thumbnail

Talk about spoiling the mood: If you?re going to the Maldives for a romantic getaway, the islands? deposed president has a great suggestion for you: Settle into your hotel room, then watch his trial on TV, reports Katrina Brown Hunt for Travel and Leisure.

Depending on whom you ask, Mohamed Nasheed either stepped down, or was ousted, from office earlier this year. Either way, he is now facing charges of abusing his power and will be tried by what he calls a ?kangaroo court.?

The former prez says that tourists should know that some luxury resorts may have backed his coup after he had hoped to market the islands ? which has long attracted both honeymooners and A-list guests such as Tom Cruise, Jennifer Aniston and Mick Jagger?to more middle-income travelers.

While normally we wouldn?t advise holing up with the telly during an island getaway, this trial could have compelling entertainment value, kangaroos notwithstanding, thanks to the colorful Nasheed.

While still in power, for instance, Nasheed once held a cabinet meeting underwater, to call attention to climate change. Today, he?s also concerned that the current administration wants to do away with kissing on beaches. ?We grew up kissing each other on the beach,? he told reporters, ?so it seems strange that our children won?t be allowed to do it.? Strange indeed.

Nikon D600

Prior to the release of the Nikon D600 ($2,099.95 direct, body only), full-frame cameras were marketed squarely at pro shooters. Well-heeled enthusiasts might put hard-earned dollars towards a D800, Canon EOS 5D Mark III , or even a Nikon D4, but those cameras are packed with features that advanced amateurs might never use. The 24-megapixel D600 eliminates some of the pro features, including the flash sync socket and CompactFlash memory support, in favor of a smaller body, but it lacks some of the bells and whistles that are packed into Canon's similar offering, the EOS 6D. The pro-level Nikon D4 ?is still our Editors' Choice for full-frame SLRs, but don't discount the D600 if you don't need the D4's full feature set?or its hefty form factor.

Design and Features
The D600 measures 4.4 by 5.6 by 3.2 inches (HWD) and weighs 1.7 pounds without a lens. It's a bit smaller around the edges when compared with the 2-pound D800 , which measures 4.8 by 4.7 by 3.2 inches, a bit taller and wider, but just as deep. The control layout is similar to that of its larger sibling, although a bit more compact and with fewer buttons. The top-mounted Mode Dial is a first for an FX Nikon camera?other models require you to hit a Mode button and to adjust the shooting mode via a control dial. It replaces a series of four buttons that controlled Image Quality, White Balance, Bracketing, and ISO on the D800. From my perspective this is a welcome change?bracketing is now controlled via a button on the front of the camera, directly below the flash release, and the other three functions have been moved to the rear, to the left of the LCD.

Where the compacted control suffers is to the right of the LCD. The directional pad, used to select the active focus point, is significantly smaller than on the D800, making it a bit less comfortable to operate. There's no dedicated AF button, so you'll have to choose between using the AE-L/AF-L control for Exposure Lock or activating the autofocus, another departure for longtime Nikon FX shooters. If you're moving up from a D7000 or other APS-C camera, you'll likely feel right at home with the D600, but owners of pro FX bodies who are considering the D600 as a second camera for events may struggle a bit when moving back and forth between bodies.

The viewfinder is the same 100 percent pentaprism that's found in the D4 and D800, but it does have a different eyepiece. Its eyepoint (the measurement of how far away your eye can be from the finder and still see it in its entirety) is 20.6 millimeters, a full 1.1 millimeter longer than the D4 and D800. This makes it easy for eyeglass wearers to see the entirety of the frame, but does make the viewfinder appear just a bit smaller than an identical one with a shorter eyepoint.

The 3.2-inch 921k-dot rear LCD is sharp and bright. It doesn't quite measure up to the million-dot display found on the Canon EOS 5D Mark III, but is sufficient for framing shots in Live View, as well as confirming critical focus in playback mode. Nikon includes a removable hard plastic cover to protect the LCD, so you won't have to worry about scratches. The display is fixed; right now, the Sony Alpha 99 is the only full-frame D-SLR with an articulating rear display.

If you're looking for GPS or Wi-Fi, keep looking. The D600 builds in neither, although the $60 WU-1b adapter plugs into the side of the camera to add Wi-Fi, and the $312 GP-1A can add GPS coordinates to your photos. The Canon EOS 6D, which sells for the same price as the D600, integrates Wi-Fi and GPS.

One advantage that Nikon users have over Canon shooters is lens compatibility?you can mount APS-C DX lenses on the D600 via a mode that crops the image in-camera, but Canon shooters can't move APS-C EF-S lenses to a full-frame system, the mounts are incompatible.

If you've coped the increased car and foot traffic at holidays you can be

Not many people are aware that all those hazards which are typical during the hectic holiday season can actually put an end to your previously cheap car insurance. There are a lot of reasons why driving at the holidays can prove more dangerous, but there are steps you can take to help keep your auto insurance quotes low.

Beeing careful when you go shopping

During the holiday season, parking lots in shopping centers and at major department stores become much busier. There are not only a lot more cars, but there are a lot more pedestrians as well. Plus, many kids have school breaks around the holidays, which means keeping an even sharper eye out for fast-moving foot traffic. At this time of year, it?s a good idea to take extra precautions when you?re out getting shopping done.

Driving Safely

There never seems to be enough time for anyone during the holidays, and this translates into unsafe driving habits. Feeling rushed and stressed trying to get everything taken care of means other drivers aren?t practicing the type of caution they normally would on the roads. People also might have their car really loaded up with boxes and packages which limit their visibility. Take a few deep breaths before starting your engine so you can remain a calm and safe driver, and keep an extra eye out for less cautious or distracted drivers.

Watching for Walkers

The foot traffic really increases during the holidays. Whether people are out shopping more, looking at the seasonal decorations, or giving their families a quick tour of the town, there are definitely a lot more folk who are out and about. Much like drivers, pedestrians at this time of year are often distracted or rushed, and not paying as much attention as they normally would to their surrounding conditions. As a driver on the road, practice being more observant during this time frame. Double-check your blind spots and try to keep from being too distracted on the roads yourself.

By following these three tips during the holidays, you?ll be able to enjoy a safe and happy time with your family. Plus, avoiding any mishaps or accidents you ensure you won?t be surprised by loaded car insurance quotes for your policy.

Ready for your close-up?

Thursday, September 27, 2012

As the saying goes, "A picture is worth a thousand words." For people in certain professions ? acting, modeling, and even politics ? this phrase rings particularly true. Previous studies have examined how our social judgments of pictures of people are influenced by factors such as whether the person is smiling or frowning, but until now one factor has never been investigated: the distance between the photographer and the subject. According to a new study by researchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), this turns out to make a difference ? close-up photo subjects, the study found, are judged to look less trustworthy, less competent, and less attractive.

The new finding is described in this week's issue of the open-access journal PLoS One.

Pietro Perona, the Allen E. Puckett Professor of Electrical Engineering at Caltech, came up with the initial idea for the study. Perona, an art history enthusiast, suspected that Renaissance portrait paintings often featured subtle geometric warping of faces to make the viewer feel closer or more distant to a subject. Perona wondered if the same sort of warping might affect photographic portraits ? with a similar effect on their viewers ? so he collaborated with Ralph Adolphs, Bren Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience and professor of biology, and CNS graduate student Ronnie Bryan (PhD '12) to gather opinions on 36 photographs representing two different images of 18 individuals. One of each pair of images was taken at close range and the second at a distance of about seven feet.

"It turns out that faces photographed quite close-up are geometrically warped, compared to photos taken at a larger distance," explains Bryan. "Of course, the close picture would also normally be larger, higher resolution and have different lighting ? but we controlled for all of that in our study. What you're left with is a warping effect that is so subtle that nobody in our study actually noticed it. Nonetheless, it's a perceptual clue that influenced their judgments."

That subtle distance warping, however, had a big effect: close-up photos made people look less trustworthy, according to study participants. The close-up photo subjects were also judged to look less attractive and competent.

"This was a surprising, and surprisingly reliable, effect," says Adolphs. "We went through a bunch of experiments, some testing people in the lab, and some even over the Internet; we asked participants to rate trustworthiness of faces, and in some experiments we asked them to invest real money in unfamiliar people whose faces they saw as a direct measure of how much they trusted them."

Across all of the studies, the researchers saw the same effect, Adolphs says: in photos taken from a distance of around two feet, a person looked untrustworthy, compared to photos taken seven feet away. These two distances were chosen by the researchers because one is within, and the other outside of, personal space ? which on average is about three to four feet from the body.

In some of the studies, the researchers digitally warped images of faces taken at a distance to artificially manipulate how trustworthy they would appear. "Once you know the relation between the distance warp and the trustworthiness judgment, you could manipulate photos of faces and change the perceived trustworthiness,'' notes Perona.

He says that the group is now planning to build on these findings, using machine-vision techniques ? technologies that can automatically analyze data in images. For example, one application would be for a computer program to have the ability to evaluate any face image in a magazine or on the Internet and to estimate the distance at which the photo was taken.

"The work might also allow us to estimate the perceived trustworthiness of a particular face image," says Perona. "You could imagine that many people would be interested in such applications ? particularly in the political arena."

Mexico nabs high-ranking cartel member 'El Taliban'

Alfredo Estrella / AFP - Getty Images

Ivan Velazquez Caballero, aka "Z 50" or "El Taliban" (second from the right), senior leader in the Zetas drug cartel and member of the Gulf cartel, is presented to the press at the Mexican Navy headquarters in Mexico City, on Sept. 27, 2012.

By Reuters

MEXICO CITY - The Mexican navy said on Wednesday it had captured one of the leaders of the Zetas drug cartel, a notoriously brutal gang reported to be breaking apart due to an internal feud.

The navy said it had caught the man it believed to be Zetas boss Ivan Velazquez in the central state of San Luis Potosi, in a boost to outgoing President Felipe Calderon's efforts to crack down on the violent cartels.

The Zetas have perpetrated some of the most sickening acts of Mexico's drug war and continued to expand even as rival gangs joined forces against them. They are now regarded as one of the two most powerful drug cartels in the country.

Velazquez is due to be paraded before the media on Thursday morning as is customary with such captures in Mexico.

Mexico's drug war is also part of a drug culture with roots in music, movies and even religion

The suspected gang leader surrendered to the navy in the city of San Luis Potosi without a shot being fired, an eyewitness told Reuters.

Known as "Z-50" or "El Taliban," Velazquez has been one of the leading figures in the Zetas. Formed by a group of army deserters in the late 1990s, the gang acted as enforcers for the Gulf Cartel before splitting with their employers in 2010.

Longstanding rivalry between the Zetas' top leader, Heriberto Lazcano, and his second-in-command Miguel Trevino has exploded into violence, raising fears the hostilities could bring a fresh wave of bloodletting.

President: Mexico gang-related deaths fall by 15 percent in 2012

Switched allegiance
The Zetas boast 10,000-plus gunmen, and the prospect of them fighting for control of local trafficking networks and smuggling routes has alarmed security experts.

However, the split also brings benefits for the government, as members of the gang inform against former colleagues.

A video "mockumentary" that shows children as kidnappers, corrupt cops and drug traffickers sparked a fierce debate in violence-torn Mexico. Msnbc.com's Dara Brown reports.

Earlier this week, Mexican news magazine Proceso reported that Velazquez had switched his allegiance to the Gulf Cartel due to a rupture with Trevino, citing messages posted online.

Velazquez is listed by the government as one of the country's most-wanted drug kingpins. The Mexican government has offered a reward of up to 30 million pesos ($2.34 million) for information leading to his arrest.

Debate rages over Mexico 'spillover violence' in US

Since 2009, more than 20 drug lords have been caught or killed. The most recent capture came two weeks ago, when the navy arrested Gulf Cartel head Jorge Costilla, alias "El Coss."

Earlier on Wednesday, the navy announced the capture of 18 suspected Zetas in the northern state of Nuevo Leon.

Mexico's drug war: No sign of 'light at the end of the tunnel'

How to contain the threat posed by the drug gangs is one of the main challenges facing Calderon's successor Enrique Pena Nieto, who is due to take office on December 1.

About 60,000 people have been killed in drug-related violence during Calderon's six-year term.

WWE Superstars fight through the pain

Following Night of Champions, the WWE Universe was shocked to learn that John Cena had to undergo an unexpected surgery to have bone chips removed from his right elbow. The Cenation?s recovery time following the procedure was estimated between four to six weeks, though he could be ready to compete at Hell in a Cell.

The operation performed on Cena?s elbow, despite proving to be more complicated than at first believed, is actually common with professional athletes, and Dr. James Andrews is the best sports-related surgeon in the world. Yet that does not take away from the fact that for months, Cena competed injured. The Cenation Leader is known for his refusal to back down, and he fought through the injury for some time before finally agreeing to? the procedure.

WWE Superstars are among the finest athletes in the world, but they are still human. Their hard work and dedication can sometimes take its toll, and in an environment filled with high-octane competition, injuries do occur. Some are minor while others are career-threatening, but even injured, WWE Superstars always try to battle through the pain ? or, at the very least, finish their match.

They try, but they don?t always succeed, especially when the injury is severe. At Survivor Series 2011, Sin Cara suffered a patella tendon rupture that resulted in his immediate removal from a Traditional Survivor Series Elimination Tag Team Match, and keeping him out of action for nearly six months.

(AP Photo/Casper Star-Tribune, Dustin Bleizeffer, File)

In this May 22, 2009 photo shows John Fenton, a farmer who lives near the rural community of Pavillion in central Wyoming, outside his log home near a tank used in natural gas extraction. Fenton and some of his neighbors blame hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking," a common technique used in drilling new oil and gas wells, for fouling their well water and possibly causing health problems among residents. The U.S. Geological Survey plans to release results of the latest testing in the Pavillion area, where some homeowners and the EPA suspect hydraulic fracking has tainted the groundwater. (AP Photo/Bob Moen)

(AP) ? The meaning of reams of new data from groundwater testing in a remote Wyoming gas field where the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency sparked concern last year will be a matter of interpretation.

Does the new science shore up damnation of hydraulic fracturing ? the petroleum industry practice of blasting water, sand and chemicals deep beneath the water table? Or does it refute criticism of the technique as too much anxious hand-wringing?

No one is making either claim yet.

The U.S. Geological Survey on Wednesday released tables showing the amounts of dozens of various chemicals in the groundwater below the Pavillion area of west-central Wyoming. But there was no analysis accompanying the data.

The information, from testing in late April, follows similar tests last year, when the EPA linked contaminants in two water wells to hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.

The new testing shows much lower levels of the carcinogen benzene than what the EPA reported. However, only one of the two wells was tested this time.

With no official interpretation as a guide, the pro-industry and environmental groups that weighed in almost instantly on the sensational EPA draft report in December were conspicuously quiet this time. Even Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead ? who actively sought the new testing and whose own employees had a hand in it ? passed on saying anything about what the data actually meant.

"We will be guided by science in the way we react to the investigation of impacts on water outside of Pavillion," Mead said in a mild prepared statement.

Benzene is a hydrocarbon commonly associated with oil and gas development. Last year's EPA testing showed benzene at almost 50 times the recommended EPA limit. The new data, from tests that involved the state, the USGS, the EPA, and the Northern Arapaho and Eastern Shoshone Indian tribes, show benzene at 3 percent of the recommended EPA limit.

But researchers this time around decided they couldn't extract enough water for a reliable sample from the well that showed the highest amount of benzene last year.

In the well the researchers did use, the amount of any benzene in the groundwater was too small to be detected last year. In that sense, the results for benzene this year are in line with last year's.

The latest data is generally "consistent with groundwater monitoring data previously released," EPA spokeswoman Alisha Johnson said by email.

The EPA has said repeatedly that the findings in Pavillion, where natural gas and drilling for it occurs at a relatively shallow level, can in no way be applied to fracking that occurs in other geologic formations elsewhere.

Encana Corp., the Calgary, Alberta, company that operates the Pavillion gas field, also declined to comment on the meaning of the data. However, company spokesman Doug Hock said the fact that one of the wells didn't produce enough water for the new testing casts doubt on the previous results.

"EPA's wells are improperly constructed," he said by email.

He said Encana would comment on the results after it had more time to review them. Same with some environmentalists: The Natural Resources Defense Council looked at the data and did not comment Wednesday.

"A better interpretation of the data would have been beneficial for the impacted residents and the public," Deb Thomas, of the Powder River Basin Resource Council, said by email. The council has been representing some of the Pavillion residents who have complained about well water that became befouled by chemicals.

Benzene is not among the chemicals the EPA pointed to last year in making the link to fracking. The process of extracting oil and gas involves pumping millions of gallons of water mixed with sand and chemicals down well holes to crack open formations and improve the flow of hydrocarbons.

Pavillion-area homeowners say their water became tainted after gas drilling ? and fracking ? picked up in their neighborhood about seven years ago.

Wyoming officials and the petroleum industry criticized the draft EPA study, characterizing its findings as flimsy. State officials were further incensed the EPA did not consult with them about the testing it was doing on their turf.

Last winter, Wyoming officials and the EPA mended fences and announced they would collaborate with the USGS and the tribes on the new testing. A full peer review of the sampling and findings to date will occur later.

Bose SoundLink Air

Given the success of the Bose SoundLink Wireless Mobile Speaker?, a portable Bluetooth speaker system released last year, the Bose SoundLink Air?, a wireless audio system based on Apple's AirPlay, is a minor disappointment. Its simple design has the familiar, spare Bose look, setting it up is a breeze, and it also has the familiar Bose sound?slightly bass heavy, with some tweaked hi-mids and treble to make everything crisp. But the $349.95 (direct) system distorts on deep bass tracks at top volumes?something that simply shouldn't happen at this price. If you don't listen to music with deep bass content, you're probably safe, but modern mixes for popular music often contain sub-bass sounds that will wreak havoc at top volumes on the SoundLink Air.

Design
The Bose SoundLink Air is a sleek, black slab of glossy plastic and speaker grille, measuring 6.8 by 12.1 by 4 inches. There's a handle grip built in to the rear side of its 4.7-pound frame, just below the top panel, and if you spend $89.95 for a rechargeable battery, it becomes portable. As is, the system needs to be plugged in to a wall socket. There are very few buttons or controls on the system?just two Volume buttons on the right hand panel; all of the real playback controls are on the included remote control, or on the iOS device from which you're streaming.

An indicator on the front panel displays the status of your Wi-Fi connection, whether you've muted the speakers, and whether you're playing audio from the Aux input instead of over Wi-Fi. The back panel houses a 3.5mm Aux input, the power adapter connection, and a USB port. There is no physical dock connection for charging iOS devices or playing audio directly from the connection.

The USB port is essential for the initial set-up of the system (a cable is included). You go to a specified link on Bose's website and download an app to your computer that quickly walks you through the AirPlay set-up process, including getting your iOS device, be it iPhone, iPod, or iPad, streaming to the speakers.

The included remote control is also black, with rubberized buttons that control Power, Mute, Volume, Play/Pause, Track Forward/Backward, and switching between Aux input and AirPlay streaming devices. Bose put a bit more effort into the design and feel of the buttons than you typically find on cheap remotes included with speakers systems, which is a plus, but more often than not, you'll probably control the audio from your iPhone or iPad.

One major complaint: the power adapter is massive. It's a roughly 3 by 3 by 2-inch black box that includes a recessed area for wrapping the attached connection cable, but it can easily eat up an entire power outlet, and it sticks far enough out from the wall to be visually and ergonomically annoying. I'm not sure I have ever seen an adapter this large for a consumer speaker system.

Performance
Sonically, the Bose SoundLink Air offers a pleasant frequency response, with an emphasis on the lower frequencies. Low-mid frequencies seem to be particularly boosted, which means electric and upright bass parts really pop out of the mix, as they did when playing "Yet Again," off the new Grizzly Bear record, Shields. For content like Fiona Apple's latest record, The Idler Wheel?, this can sound great, because the album is not full of overwhelming sub-bass sounds, so the overall effect is to beef the mix up a bit, letting instruments like the upright bass or deeper percussion grab a bit more of the spotlight.

Purists won't love the bass boost, however, and no one will love what happens to songs with seriously deep bass, like the Knife's "Silent Shout." At top volumes, regardless of whether you're streaming via AirPlay or playing through the Aux input, this track distorts wildly. To be fair, the SoundLink Air can get quite loud, and at less intense volumes, it sounds powerful and clean, even on deep bass tracks. But distortion simply shouldn't be an issue in this price range, and it's a bit of a surprise coming from Bose.

Instrumental tracks, like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," get some added low-end oomph for the lower register strings and deeper percussion hits. Again, purists may not love it, but it does add a certain dimension to the music that fans of stronger bass response will enjoy. Bose also does a good job of making sure the high frequencies never take too much of a backseat?whether it's Fiona Apple's vocals or John Adams' violinists, things are always pretty crisp.

Bose doesn't make systems for audiophiles, no matter what the marketing may imply. The SoundLink Air, like the Beats by Dr. Dre Beatbox Portable?, offers a highly sculpted frequency response designed to highlight the bass-heavy mixes we often hear in modern day pop, rock, rap, and even in film scores. The Beats system offers an even more pronounced bass response, but near this price range, there are some more purist-friendly wireless audio options. We love the JBL OnBeat Xtreme?, which uses Bluetooth instead of AirPlay, and offers a balanced, powerful output without distortion at top levels.

In the AirPlay realm, the best systems are usually a little pricier than the SoundLink Air?the Klipsch Gallery G-17 Air? and Altec Lansing's inAir 5000 Wireless AirPlay Speaker? are two fine examples of how good AirPlay can sound, but the higher price has a lot to do with why. The SoundLink Air is by no means a bad speaker system?if you don't listen to music with seriously deep, sub-bass content in the mix, you're unlikely to experience much in the way of distortion, even at top volumes. But if you're looking for a good wireless speaker system and you like hip hop, electronic, or modern rock, and you like to play your music loud, you're probably better off looking into other AirPlay or Bluetooth systems.

September 22, 2012

Efforts are continuing in north Minneapolis to replace thousands of trees downed in a tornado in May 2011.

The St. Louis Park-based Tree Trust is planting nearly 70 trees in the area this weekend. The varieties include River Birch, Greenspire Linden, Thornless Hawthorne and Royal Raindrops Crabapple.

Kim Lawler of Tree Trust says the group has planted about 700 donated trees in north Minneapolis since last fall, and most are doing well.

"Obviously, it's been a really tough summer with the drought," Lawler said. "And so when we distributed them in the spring, we did encourage people to ensure they were getting that 1 inch of water per week on those weeks where we were not getting rain. And as we've been up in the neighborhoods, it looks like that's probably been happening. I know people were really happy to get the trees, so I think that they've been really taking good care of them thus far."

Lawler says people can still sign up for an October planting of 180 donated trees, adding that the Tree Trust will continue planting until a fund runs out.

"The fund is actually the Rob MacIntyre fund," Lawler said. "And Mr. MacIntyre was a gentleman who unfortunately lost his life while helping to clean up the devastation of the tornado. So far we've had some really nice contributions into that fund, including one from an anonymous family in the Twin Cities area who made a very large gift to that fund, which is really what's helping to make a lot of this work possible."

Schools essential for special needs - Stuff

Research evidence does not support the proposed closure of two of New Zealand's residential schools for children with severe behavioural difficulties, University of Canterbury Professor Garry Hornby said today.
?
The Ministry of Education plans to close McKenzie Residential School in Christchurch and Salisbury Residential School in Nelson. Today was the final day for submissions to the proposal.
?
The alternative suggested by the Ministry is an expansion of the Wraparound service for children with severe behavioural difficulties, which was developed in the USA.
?
However, recent reviews of Wraparound in the USA have found limited evidence of its effectiveness. Studies have found high drop-out rates, and its impact on outcomes has been small.
?
A recent survey in New Zealand conducted by the Principals Federation found?that, of the schools which had accessed the intensive Wraparound service, 53 percent reported that it did not bring about sustainable positive behaviour change, compared with 19 percent which considered that it had, and 26 percent which considered that it was too early to tell.
?
''This is not surprising because the Wraparound approach depends on support services such as educational psychologists, social workers, and health service personnel working in effective partnerships with schools and families. International research conducted over many years on multi-agency working such as this, has found that, despite good intentions, it is in practice very difficult to carry out effectively,'' Hornby said.
?
He said research conducted over the past eight years with young people who attended the McKenzie school, found that it was after children returned to mainstream schools following intensive intervention that things would go badly wrong, resulting in most cases of these children leaving the school system before the age of 16.

He said that the effectiveness of any service for children with severe behavioural difficulties was dependent on the ability of mainstream schools to cater effectively for them in the long term.?
?
''This needs to be the major focus of attention if the education of these children is to be improved and needs to be addressed before any consideration of reducing current provision by closing two of the four residential schools.?
?
''This will require the training of all mainstream school teachers and the development of school organisation, so that they all have clear structures for identifying and providing appropriate systems for pupils with special educational needs, including those with behavioural difficulties.?
?
''For example, it is important to have trained special educational needs coordinators in all mainstream schools, as was recommended in the Wylie Review of 2000, but has not yet been implemented.?
?
''Until these changes are brought about in mainstream schools it is essential to have the two residential schools available to cater for children with severe behavioural difficulties. For some of these children being taken out of their local environment into a residential school is what saves them from a complete meltdown.''?
?
Not having these schools as a last resort option for very vulnerable children would put enormous stress on mainstream schools they would attend and on their families in trying to cope with them at home, he said.?
?
''The move to close these two residential schools in favour of more Wraparound provision is premature and should be put on hold,'' Professor Hornby said.

HBT: Escobar's suspension over, but not in Jays lineup

Blue Jays shortstop Yunel Escobar?s team-imposed three-game suspension has concluded, but he?s not in the lineup for Friday?s game against the Rays.

Escobar was suspended Tuesday after wearing eye black inscribed with a anti-gay slur.

?When we met earlier today it became increasing clear during that discussion that he needs another day to get back and be ready to play a major league game,? manager John Farrell said. ?It?s not so much staying in shape or baseball activity, it?s just about how he?s dealing with the fallout of what he did. He?s remorseful for what took place, and as a result he needs another day to get things in line.?

Farrell indicated that Escobar would be ready to play Saturday, though he didn?t commit to putting him in the lineup.

Adeiny Hecehvarria started at shortstop during Escobar?s absence and is back there tonight.

Trimble Introduces New Compact OEM GNSS Receiver Module with ...

Trimble has introduced at the ION GNSS Conference in Nashville the Trimble BD920-W3G receiver and communication module. As part of Trimble?s GNSS OEM portfolio, the new compact module features centimeter-level, real-time kinematic (RTK) positioning capabilities coupled with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and cellular that deliver flexible communication options for precise, mobile positioning. The BD920-W3G module?s connectivity and configuration ease allow system integrators and OEMs to easily add GNSS centimeter-level positioning to specialized or custom hardware solutions, Trimble said.

?The OEM and system integrator communities demand high performance, reliability and support for their positioning solutions,? said Dale Hermann, director of marketing and sales. ?The Trimble BD920-W3G delivers the latest in GNSS and communication technology in an easy-to-integrate form factor for demanding conditions and applications such as field computing, port automation, and lightweight robotic or unmanned vehicles.?

The Trimble BD920-W3G module has been designed for applications requiring centimeter accuracy in a compact package. By integrating wireless communications on the same module, the task of receiving and transmitting data such as RTK corrections is greatly simplified. A single intuitive Web interface allows a variety of use cases to be supported. In addition to GNSS base and rover setups with Wi-Fi or UMTS modem, the module also allows simultaneous customer access to the Internet.

The dual-frequency GPS/GLONASS BD920-W3G provides customers with a more integrated product that can reduce their integration effort and time to market. Wireless communications and Ethernet connectivity are available on the module to allow high-speed data transfer and configuration via standard Web browsers. USB and RS232 are also supported. By tightly integrating communications and GNSS receiver, integrators can reduce costs and integration complexity, the company said.

The Trimble BD920-W3G is expected to be available in the first quarter of 2013 through Trimble?s Precision GNSS + Inertial sales channel worldwide. The BD920-W3G can be viewed in 3D on Trimble?s 3D Warehouse by SketchUp. OEMs and integrators can also download a 3D model into their applications. For more information, visit www.trimble.com/gnss-inertial.
