OSU president Gee jabs at 'those damn Catholics'

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? The president of Ohio State University said Notre Dame was never invited to join the Big Ten because the university's priests are not good partners, joking that "those damn Catholics" can't be trusted, according to a recording of a meeting he attended late last year.

At the December meeting of the school's Athletic Council, Gordon Gee also took shots at schools in the Southeastern Conference and the University of Louisville, according to the recording, obtained by The Associated Press under a public records request.

The university called the statements inappropriate and said Gee is undergoing a "remediation plan" because of the remarks.

Gee apologized in a statement released to the AP.

"The comments I made were just plain wrong, and in no way do they reflect what the university stands for," he said. "They were a poor attempt at humor and entirely inappropriate."

Gee, who has taken heat previously for uncouth remarks, told members of the council that he negotiated with Notre Dame officials during his first term at Ohio State, which began more than two decades ago.

"The fathers are holy on Sunday, and they're holy hell on the rest of the week," Gee said to laughter at the Dec. 5 meeting attended by Athletic Director Gene Smith and several other athletic department members, along with professors and students.

"You just can't trust those damn Catholics on a Thursday or a Friday, and so, literally, I can say that," said Gee, a Mormon.

The Big Ten had for years courted Notre Dame, but the school resisted, seeking to retain its independent status in college football. The school announced in September that it would join the Atlantic Coast Conference in all sports except football. It also agreed to play five football games each year against ACC teams.

In the recording, Gee referred specifically to dealing with the Rev. Ned Joyce, Notre Dame's longtime chief financial officer, who died in 2004.

"Father Joyce was one of those people who ran the university for many, many years," Gee said.

Gee said the Atlantic Coast Conference added Notre Dame at a time when it was feeling vulnerable.

"Notre Dame wanted to have its cake and eat it, too," Gee said, according to the recording and a copy of the meeting's minutes.

Gee was introduced by Athletic Council then-chairman Charlie Wilson, and Gee's name and introduction are included in written minutes of the meeting. Gee's comments drew laughter, at times loud, occasionally nervous, but no rebukes, according to the audio.

The Athletic Council meets monthly during the fall, winter and spring and makes recommendations on athletic policy including ticket prices. December's meeting was at Ohio Stadium.

Ohio State trustees learned of "certain offensive statements" by Gee in January, met with the president at length and created the remediation plan for Gee to "address his behavior," board president Robert Schottenstein said in a statement.

"These statements were inappropriate, were not presidential in nature and do not comport with the core values of the University," Schottenstein said.

Gee has gotten in trouble for his offhand remarks, most recently during a memorabilia-for-cash and tattoos scandal that cost football coach Jim Tressel his job. Tressel had known about allegations that players were trading game paraphernalia for money and tattoos but didn't tell the university in violation of his contract and NCAA regulations.

Gee was asked in March 2011 whether he had considered firing Tressel. He responded: "No, are you kidding? Let me just be very clear: I'm just hopeful the coach doesn't dismiss me." Tressel stepped down three months later.

In November 2010, Gee boasted that Ohio State's football schedule didn't include teams on par with the "Little Sisters of the Poor." An apologetic Gee later sent a personal check to the real Little Sisters of the Poor in northwest Ohio and followed up with a visit to the nuns months later.

Last year, Gee apologized for comparing the problem of coordinating the school's many divisions to the Polish army, an off-the-cuff remark that a Polish-American group called a "slanderous" display of bigotry and ignorance.

Gee has one of the highest-profile resumes of any college president in recent history. He has held the top job at West Virginia University, the University of Colorado, Brown University and Vanderbilt University. He was Ohio State president from 1990 to 1997, and returned in 2007. He earns about $1.9 million annually in base pay, deferred and performance compensation and retirement benefits.

He is a prolific fundraiser and is leading a $2.5 billion campaign at Ohio State. He is omnipresent on campus, attending everything from faculty awards events to dormitory pizza parties. He is known for his bow ties ? he has hundreds ? and his horn-rimmed glasses.

During his comments to the Athletic Council, Gee also questioned the academic integrity of schools in the Southeastern Conference, and the University of Louisville.

The top goal of Big Ten presidents is to "make certain that we have institutions of like-minded academic integrity," Gee said. "So you won't see us adding Louisville," a member of the Big East conference that is also joining the ACC.

After a pause followed by laughter from the audience, Gee added that the Big Ten wouldn't add the University of Kentucky, either.

During the meeting, Gee also said he thought it was a mistake not to include Missouri and Kansas in earlier Big Ten expansion plans. Missouri has since joined the SEC.

"You tell the SEC when they can learn to read and write, then they can figure out what we're doing," Gee said, when asked by a questioner how to respond to SEC fans who say the Big Ten can't count because it now has 14 members.

Gee noted he was chairman of the SEC during his time as Vanderbilt University chancellor. He also told his audience that speculation about the SEC "remains right here," according to the recording.

Gee took a swipe at Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delaney, one of the most powerful leaders in college athletics, when he answered a question about preserving Ohio State's financial interests in light of Big Ten revenue-sharing plans.

"No one admires Jim Delaney more than I do ? I chaired the committee that brought him here," Gee said. "Jim is very aggressive, and we need to make certain he keeps his hands out of our pockets while we support him."

Feds, soldier's supporter in Wikileaks case settle

BOSTON (AP) -- The federal government has agreed to destroy all data obtained from a computer and other electronic devices seized from an outspoken advocate of an Army private accused of sending more than 700,000 classified U.S. documents to Wikileaks, the American Civil Liberties Union announced Thursday.

The settlement comes in a lawsuit in which David House accused authorities of violating his constitutional rights when he was stopped at a Chicago airport in returning home to Massachusetts from abroad. A federal judge more than a year ago refused to dismiss the lawsuit.

The ACLU said the government also agreed to hand over numerous documents related to the use of the seized data and questioning of House, a founding member of The Bradley Manning Support Network.

"The seizure of David House's computer is a chilling example of the government's overbroad ability to conduct a search at the border that intrudes into a person's political beliefs and associations," said John Reinstein, an attorney with the ACLU of Massachusetts. "Those rights were vindicated by the settlement we reached."

The ACLU posted a copy of the agreement on its website. Allison Price, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Department of Justice, which defended the government in the lawsuit, declined to comment on the settlement. The posted copy said that the government does not admit to any wrongdoing and that House may continue to be subject to lawful searches and inspections.

Pfc. Bradley Manning has been charged with indirectly aiding the enemy by causing classified material to be published on WikiLeaks. His 3-year-old espionage case is headed for trial Monday at Fort Meade, near Baltimore.

In a February statement, Manning said he leaked the Afghan and Iraq battlefield reports, State Department cables and video of a U.S. Apache helicopter attack that killed a Reuters news photographer and his driver because he wanted the public to know how the American military was fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan with little regard for human life.

House, who was living in Cambridge, was stopped by Homeland Security agents in 2010 as he arrived back in the U.S. at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago. House said his property wasn't returned for seven weeks. It included his laptop, a thumb drive and video camera.

The ACLU said his personal information as well as private documents related to the Manning network were copied during that time and given to other federal agencies, including military criminal investigators who concluded that they would not use the information.

House alleges that federal officials targeted him based on his association with the network that raised money for Manning's legal defense.

Documents that the government agreed to surrender include reports describing the Army Criminal Investigation Division's inspection of House's data as well as a Department of Homeland Security "Lookout" telling agents to stop House as he entered the country, the ACLU said in a statement.

"The government's surrender of this data is a victory through vital action not only for the citizens put at risk, but also for anyone who believes that Americans should be free to support political causes without fearing retaliation from Washington," House said.

He said the settlement ensures that people who contributed money to pay for Manning's legal defense would not be met with retaliation and their identities would be reclaimed from authorities who copied the data from his electronic devices.

Hello Moto X

3064837226_e4f7fe8bc6_oSurprising no one, Motorola chief Dennis Woodside revealed at D11 that Motorola is tooling a new flagship Android device. This device, cleverly named Moto X, will be widely distributed and most likely the device that slipped through the FCC’s test labs last week. The phone is going to be made, at least in part, in the United States. Surprise surprise. Look for the Moto X along with several other high-end Android phones this fall. As Ryan detailed yesterday, Woodside revealed little else about the Moto X at his talk yesterday. He mentioned that the phone will be “contextually aware” meaning that the phone will know when it’s inside a pocket and when it’s taken out, when it’s inside a car and when it’s on a desk. Clever but hopefully Motorola has more tricks in the works too. The Android scene is expecting big things from Motorola. The American company is the only one most feel can stand up to the boring industrial machine that Samsung is quickly turning becoming. HTC is dying, LG doesn’t support its phones, and Google still can’t figure out how to get people its Nexus phones. What the Android world needs is a phone as exciting as the original RAZR with the magic of a StarTAC. Motorola’s upcoming phone has been playing well on fansites and blogs for weeks now. The phone is hyped on the back of blue-sky expectations. Android fans want it to be something special. Motorola has had its share of Android hits. The Droid line kicked the Android movement into high-gear and Motorola was responsible for the majority of Verizon’s early Android hits. The rebirth of the RAZR brought big screens and big battery’s to Android. Yet with these successes, Motorola never achieved the same sort of success as Samsung. Hopefully with Google’s tutelage, the Moto X and its stable mates, will be the big hit Motorola has yet to see. Hopefully Motorola and Google took notes on Samsung’s single brand strategy and will only release a small product line of quality devices. Hopefully Motorola won’t over advertise that this phone will be made in the USA. It’s clear that high-tech manufacturing is coming back to the United States. For the longest time, Motorola, and Apple for that matter, built their wares in U.S. factories. Cheap labor and improved supply chain management drove these companies overseas. Motorola will need to carefully walk

Egyptian tourist critically injured in Istanbul protests

ABUJA (Reuters) - Nigeria's House of Representatives passed a bill on Thursday to criminalise gay marriage, same-sex "amorous relationships" and even membership of a gay rights group, defying pressure from Western powers to respect gay and lesbian rights. The bill, which contains penalties of up to 14 years in prison, passed Nigeria's Senate in late-2011 but President Goodluck Jonathan must approve it before it becomes law. Two similar bills have been proposed since 2006 but this is the first time one has passed through the national assembly. ...

Organic polymers show sunny potential: Groundwork laid for block copolymer solar cells

May 29, 2013 ? A new version of solar cells created by laboratories at Rice and Pennsylvania State universities could open the door to research on a new class of solar energy devices.

The photovoltaic devices created in a project led by Rice chemical engineer Rafael Verduzco and Penn State chemical engineer Enrique Gomez are based on block copolymers, self-assembling organic materials that arrange themselves into distinct layers. They easily outperform other cells with polymer compounds as active elements.

The discovery is detailed online in the American Chemical Society journal Nano Letters.

While commercial, silicon-based solar cells turn about 20 percent of sunlight into electricity and experimental units top 25 percent, there's been an undercurrent of research into polymer-based cells that could greatly reduce the cost of solar energy, Verduzco said. The Rice/Penn State cells reach about 3 percent efficiency, but that's surprisingly better than other labs have achieved using polymer compounds.

"You need two components in a solar cell: one to carry (negative) electrons, the other to carry positive charges," Verduzco said. The imbalance between the two prompted by the input of energy -- sunlight -- creates useful current.

Since the mid-1980s, researchers have experimented with stacking or mixing polymer components with limited success, Verduzco said. Later polymer/fullerene mixtures topped 10 percent efficiency, but the fullerenes -- in this case, enhanced C-60 buckyballs -- are difficult to work with, he said.

The Rice lab discovered a block copolymer -- P3HT-b-PFTBT -- that separates into bands that are about 16 nanometers wide. More interesting to the researchers was the polymers' natural tendency to form bands perpendicular to the glass. The copolymer was created in the presence of a glass/indium tin oxide (ITO) top layer at a modest 165 degrees Celsius.

With a layer of aluminum on the other side of the device constructed by the Penn State team, the polymer bands stretched from the top to bottom electrodes and provided a clear path for electrons to flow.

"On paper, block copolymers are excellent candidates for organic solar cells, but no one has been able to get very good photovoltaic performance using block copolymers," Verduzco said. "We didn't give up on the idea of block copolymers because there's really only been a handful of these types of solar cells previously tested. We thought getting good performance using block copolymers was possible if we designed the right materials and fabricated the solar cells under the right conditions."

Mysteries remain, he said. "It's not clear why the copolymer organizes itself perpendicular to the electrodes," he said. "Our hypothesis is that both polymers want to be in contact with the ITO-coated glass. We think that forces this orientation, though we haven't proven it yet."

He said the researchers want to experiment with other block copolymers and learn to control their structures to increase the solar cell's ability to capture photons and turn them into electricity. Once they have achieved higher performance from the cells, the team will look at long-term use.

"We'll focus on performance first, because if we can't get it high enough, there's no reason to address some of the other challenges like stability," Verduzco said. Encapsulating a solar cell to keep air and water from degrading it is easy, he said, but protecting it from ultraviolet degradation over time is hard. "You have to expose it to sunlight. That you can't avoid."

Co-authors of the paper are Rice graduate students Yen-Hao Lin and Kendall Smith; Penn State graduate student Changhe Guo and undergraduate Matthew Witman; Argonne National Laboratory researcher Joseph Strzalka; Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory postdoctoral researcher Cheng Wang and staff scientist Alexander Hexemer; and Enrique Gomez, an assistant professor in the Penn State Department of Chemical Engineering. Verduzco is an assistant professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering.

The National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, the Welch Foundation, the Shell Center for Sustainability and the Louis and Peaches Owen Family Foundation supported the research.

Activists criticize reported NKorean repatriation

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? Human rights groups on Thursday demanded that North Korea guarantee the safety of nine of its citizens who reportedly fled to Laos, only to be apprehended and sent back home.

Seven men and two women were flown home Tuesday via China despite a request from South Korea that Beijing not repatriate them, the Chosun Ilbo daily newspaper in Seoul reported Thursday, citing unidentified South Korean government officials. The Yonhap news agency provided the same information, citing a Foreign Ministry official in Seoul.

South Korea's Foreign Ministry declined to confirm the report.

Close to 25,000 North Koreans have left their authoritarian country since the end of the Korean War, the vast majority via China and then onward via Southeast Asian countries including Laos, Thailand and Vietnam before flying to Seoul.

China, North Korea's foremost ally, does not recognize the defectors as asylum seekers and has been known to return them to Pyongyang.

Activists say defectors caught leaving North Korea without state permission could face prison and even torture.

Under North Korean law, defectors face a minimum of five years of hard labor and as much as life in prison or the death penalty in cases deemed particularly serious.

"North Korea has to come clean on where these nine refugees are and publicly guarantee that they will not be harmed or retaliated against for having fled the country," said Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director of Human Rights Watch. "As a result of their return, they are at dire risk."

The Yonhap report said the defectors, aged between 15 and 23, entered Laos through China on May 9 and were caught by Laotian authorities May 16.

According to the North's official Korean Central News Agency, a delegation from the Laotian capital of Vientiane visited North Korea on May 20. Laos sent the defectors to China on Monday before they were sent to North Korea a day later, Yonhap reported.

Several attempts to contact officials in Laos, a secretive and strict socialist regime in Southeast Asia, were unsuccessful.

"It's tragic and disappointing," Kim Eun-young, an activist with the Seoul-based Citizens' Alliance for North Korean Human Rights, said Thursday of the reported repatriation. "We fear defectors will now feel more intimidated about trying to come to South Korea through Laos or other Southeast Asian countries."

In Seoul, protesters pleaded Wednesday with the South Korean government to step up efforts to stop the repatriation of the North Koreans. Nine "young lives were in your hands," read one sign addressed to Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se.

The number of North Koreans who settle in South Korea had been rising over several years before peaking in 2009 with nearly 3,000 arrivals. The South Korean constitution guarantees North Koreans citizenship after the government can establish that they are not spies.

Flows have slowed significantly since then. Last year, just over 1,500 arrived in South Korea, according to the government in Seoul.

There are unconfirmed reports that North Korea has boosted security at the Chinese border in recent years to slow the flow of defectors. Over the past year, North Korea has publicized the return of some defectors to North Korea.

The U.S. government, which supports efforts to promote reform in North Korea and is a strong ally of South Korea, said in a statement that it was concerned about the reports of the repatriation and urged "all countries in the region to cooperate in the protection of North Korean refugees within their territories."

The Korean Peninsula has been divided by a 4-kilometer-wide (2.5-mile-wide) Demilitarized Zone since the Korean War ended with an armistice in 1953.

Exercise in Moderation, Not in Excess to Prevent Heart Disease

In all dietary and fitness pursuits, moderation is key. Socrates put the concept of practicing moderation into our consciousness 2,500 years ago when he proclaimed, ?Everything in moderation, nothing in excess.?

One hundred years ago, Oscar Wilde blew the lid off the whole thing when he said, ?Everything in moderation, including moderation.?

runner

But Socrates and Wilde didn?t live in a polarizing world of both obesity and extreme exercise. We live in a dangerously unhealthy society, and with the recent release of studies condemning grueling exercise, it?s important to strike a healthy balance.

Endurance athletes?the people who compete in triathlons, Ironman events, and marathons?are an intense bunch. They continually push their bodies to the brink of exhaustion, and then keep running. The small community of endurance athletes around the world are an understandably prideful group, and they feed off the narcotic high of extreme athletic accomplishment. So anyone who introduces a study claiming to have found damning evidence against radical fitness better have a hell of a case.

Various new research shows that there is such a thing as ?over exercise,? and it can lead to many external and internal damages. In regards to heart health and fitness, cardiac electrophysiologist John Mandrola told the Wall Street Journal, ?Heart disease comes from inflammation and if you?re constantly, chronically inflaming yourself, never letting your body heal, why wouldn?t there be a relationship between over exercise and heart disease?? Contradictions to this school of thought abound, as running and exercise science experts continue to champion the health benefits of incessant exercise.

Last summer, Geralyn Coopersmith?national director of the Equinox Fitness Training Institute?claimed that ?exercise addiction? is becoming an epidemic, and those afflicted are forced to seek professional help from psychologists and counselors. The body is more prone to injury after periods of excessive exercise and can negatively impact a person?s mood.

In 2009, a Time magazine cover story implied that humans might not even need exercise to lose weight, claiming that some moderate movement throughout the day is the best way to keep weight off. Our Neolithic ancestors were a fit looking bunch, mainly due to the fact that their livelihood required constant motion to survive, a practice we modern humans should imitate.

Not all endurance athletes are maladjusted junkies, and our obese society doesn?t need to hear that exercise is bad. Exercise still has a plethora of benefits?from improving mood to aiding in sleep?and they should not be discounted. The underlying message of it all harkens back to the moderation proverb?too much of anything is bad.

Don?t drive your mind and body insane with obsessive exercise, but stay active and maintain a balanced lifestyle on all fronts. There are so many ways to burn calories while giving your body the fitness tune up it desperately needs. So get active in a healthy way, and make sure to love the way you move.

Corey Feldman performs live as Michael Jackson

Celebs

Fans who follow the metal band Limp Bizkit might not think that the music of Michael Jackson would be a natural fit during one of their live shows. Nor might they expect that former child actor Corey Feldman, dressed up as the late King of Pop, would have a place either.

They would be wrong.

On Friday, Feldman (a longtime friend of Jackson's who went on to appear in such films as "Stand By Me," "The Goonies" and "The Lost Boys") popped up at Bizkit's House of Blues show on Friday wearing a fedora and sparkling white glove reminiscent of Jackson, and launched into "Billie Jean."

"Ladies and gentlemen, Corey Feldman f------ you up tonight," singer Fred Durst announced after the song, reported Radio.com. The band and Feldman later duetted on George Michael's "Faith," a song the band has been known to perform live frequently.

Durst and Co. were clearly happy to have Feldman on hand; afterward they Instragrammed a picture of him in full regalia; Durst wrote: "My old school soldier @corey_feldman busted out tribute to @michaeljackson at our LA concert/party! Classic"

Feldman himself was fully into his act; he tweeted video of the songs, writing "Here as promised is that video of my surprise performance on Fri :)" and later sent out another Tweet from Saturday featuring him at a performance at an outdoor screening of "Stand By Me" in Los Angeles. In the tweet, he noted that Jackson's former guitar tech now works for him.

Feldman's hobby as a Jackson tribute artist would be unusual on its own; based on his history with the singer it borders on bizarre. The pair were friends while Feldman was a young actor, and in 2005 Feldman said that Jackson did inappropriate things when they were friends, such as looking at a book of nudes with the then-teenaged Feldman.

But he denied being abused by Jackson. In 2008, Feldman told People that Jackson had hurt him by abruptly dropping him as a friend as he got older.

"He did real damage in my overall life," Feldman said then. "The biggest thing that Michael's done to children is befriending the ones that are in need and then abandoning them."

But at some point he began appearing as Jackson, showing up at his memorial in costume. He also dedicated a Los Angeles hospital concert with his band Truth Movement to Jackson, telling People at the time, "I don't think I have fully, completely come to terms with (his death) yet. I have waves and flashes. One moment, I feel fine and I'm myself. Then all of a sudden, it hits me, and I go, 'Wow, he's really gone. It's very troubling.' "

US banks report record earnings of $40.3B for Q1

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. banks earned more from January through March than during any quarter on record, buoyed by greater income from fees and fewer losses from bad loans.

The banking industry earned $40.3 billion in the first quarter, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. said Wednesday. That's the highest ever for a single quarter and up 15.8 percent from the first quarter of 2012, when the industry's profits were $34.8 billion.

Record profits show banks have come a long way from the 2008 financial crisis. But the report offered a reminder that the industry is still struggling to help the broader economy recover from the Great Recession.

Only about half of U.S. banks reported improved earnings from a year earlier, the lowest proportion since 2009. That shows the industry's growth is being driven by a narrower group of the nation's largest banks.

Those banks include Bank of America Corp., Citigroup Inc., JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Wells Fargo & Co. Most of them have recovered with help from federal bailout money and record-low borrowing rates.

Bank lending declined from the October-December quarter, although that followed several quarters of increases.

And bank profits from interest charged fell 2.2 percent to $104 billion. The industry's average interest income as a percentage of total loans on its books fell from 3.35 percent to 3.27 percent. That's the lowest portion of total loans in nearly seven years.

That has forced banks to see more revenue from fees, despite complaints from customers and consumer advocates.

FDIC Chairman Martin Gruenberg said the banking industry "is in much stronger shape today than it was three years ago." But he added that "it's a fairly tricky environment for the industry" because of narrowing profit margins from charging interest and relatively weak demand for loans.

Income earned from interest on loans is falling in part because interest rates have been near record lows. The Federal Reserve's aggressive stimulus programs since the crisis have exerted downward pressure on short- and long-term interest rates, making mortgages and other loans cheaper. The Fed's low interest-rate policies are intended to boost borrowing and spending to accelerate overall economic growth.

Still, many banks have adopted stricter lending standards since the financial crisis, requiring higher credit scores, larger down payments and proof of employment. So while loans are a bargain, they are only available to those who can qualify.

Another sign of the industry's health is that fewer banks are at risk of failure. The number of banks on the FDIC's "problem" list fell to 612 from 651 as of Dec. 31.

And so far this year, only 13 banks have failed. That follows 51 closures last year, 92 in 2011 and 157 in 2010. The 2010 closures were the most in one year since the height of the savings and loan crisis in 1992.

On Tuesday, Moody's Investors Service said it had raised its outlook for the U.S. banking industry from "Negative" to "Stable," the first increase in five years. The rating agency said sustained economic growth and a better jobs picture will help banks over the next 12 to 18 months.

The FDIC is backed by the government, and its deposits are guaranteed up to $250,000 per account. Apart from its deposit insurance fund, the agency also has tens of billions in loss reserves.

7 charged in $6B online money laundering case

NEW YORK (AP) ? Calling it perhaps the biggest money laundering scheme in U.S. history, federal prosecutors charged seven people Tuesday with running what amounted to an online, underworld bank that handled $6 billion for drug dealers, child pornographers, identity thieves and other criminals around the globe.

The case was aimed at Liberty Reserve, a currency transfer and payment processing company based in Costa Rica that authorities say allowed customers to move money anonymously from one account to another via the Internet with almost no questions asked.

U.S. officials said the enterprise was staggering in scope: Over roughly seven years, Liberty Reserve processed 55 million illicit transactions worldwide for 1 million users, including 200,000 in the U.S.

The network "became the bank of choice for the criminal underworld," U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said in announcing the unsealing of an indictment against the defendants, including Liberty Revenue founder Arthur Budovsky, an American who renounced his U.S. citizenship after deciding to set up in Costa Rica.

Liberty Reserve allowed users to open accounts using fictitious names, including "Russian Hacker" and "Hacker Account." An undercover investigator was able to register using the name "Joe Bogus" and the address "123 Fake Main Street" in "Completely Made Up City, New York," and then conduct transactions he recorded as "ATM skimming network" and "for the cocaine."

"The coin of the realm was anonymity," Bharara said. "It was the opposite of a know-your-customer policy."

The network charged a 1 percent fee on transactions through middlemen known as exchangers, who converted real currency into virtual funds and then back into cash.

In the indictment, prosecutors called the network "one of the principal means by which cyber criminals around the world distribute, store and launder proceeds of their illegal activity ... including credit card fraud, identity theft, investment fraud, computer hacking, child pornography and narcotics trafficking."

Bharara said it was possibly "the largest international money laundering case ever brought by the United States."

Budovsky and another defendant, identified as Azzeddine el Amine, were arrested Friday at a Madrid airport while trying to return to Costa Rica, according to a Spanish court official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because court policy forbids him from speaking on the record. They were ordered jailed while they await a hearing on extradition to the U.S.

Two other men, including Liberty Reserve co-founder Vladimir Kats, were arrested last week in New York City. There was no public record of their arraignments on Friday night, and there was no immediate response to phone messages left Tuesday with their attorneys.

Of the three remaining defendants, one was in custody in Costa Rica and the others were at large there.

A notice pasted across Liberty Reserve's website Tuesday morning said the domain "has been seized by the United States Global Illicit Financial Team." Attempts to reach Liberty Reserve by phone and email were unsuccessful.

Budovsky and Kats have previous convictions on state charges related to an unlicensed money transmitting business, according to court papers. After that case, they decided to move their operation to Costa Rica, the papers said.

In an online chat captured by law enforcement, Kats admitted Liberty Reserve was illegal and noted that authorities in the United States knew it was "a money-laundering operation that hackers use."

While authorities described Liberty Reserve as being rife with criminals, the site's ease of use, low fees and irreversible transactions that deterred fraud also attracted legitimate users.

Mitchell Rossetti, whose Houston-based ePayCards.com was one of several mainstream merchants that accepted Liberty Reserve's online-only currency, said his business still had about $28,000 tied up in Liberty Reserve accounts.

"The irony of this is I went to them because of the security," Rossetti said. "All sales were final."

He acknowledged that the currency was being used by scammers but said Liberty Reserve funds were just like any other currency: "The U.S. dollar can be donated to a church or it can pay a prostitute."

Liberty Reserve appears to have played an important role in laundering proceeds from the recent theft of some $45 million from two Middle Eastern banks, according to documents made public by U.S. authorities earlier this month. In that scheme, thieves stole debit card information and then used it to drain cash from thousands of ATMs around the world in a matter of hours.

As part of the Liberty Reserve investigation, authorities raided 14 places in Panama, Switzerland, the U.S., Sweden and Costa Rica. In Costa Rica, investigators recovered five luxury cars, including three Rolls-Royces. Bharara said authorities also seized Liberty's computer servers in Costa Rica and Switzerland.

The businesses that were raided in Costa Rica on Friday as part of the investigation into Liberty Reserve are dedicated to Web hosting services, website development and Internet business consulting.

In Costa Rica, all online businesses are legal and there aren't any laws regulating them, so the country has been attracting entrepreneurs setting up Internet-based companies that do everything from e-commerce to gambling banned in other countries.

Solidoodle 2 Pro

By Tony Hoffman

The Solidoodle 2 Pro 3D printer has a consumer-friendly price and does well in consistently printing out plastic objects from CAD files. Solidoodle targets this product toward an eclectic mix of users, from tech-savvy consumers all the way to professionals. Based on the amount of troubleshooting I had to do in getting it up and running, it's suitable for experienced users rather than typical consumers. Anyone setting the Solidoodle 2 Pro, if their experience is at all similar to mine, would need to be very patient and liberally avail themselves of Solidoodle's extensive help resources before being able to print with it. But once my test unit was up and running, the Solidoodle 2 Pro performed like a pro, consistently printing out objects of decent quality with few misprints.

There are several models in the Solidoodle stable. The Solidoodle 2 Pro has a few advantages over the base model in its line (Solidoodle 2, $499 direct): Its build platform is heated, and it has an upgraded spool holder and power supply, plus interior lighting. The Solidoodle 2 Expert ($699) adds a cover and a front door. A third-generation model, the Solidoodle 3 ($799), has a larger (8-by-8-by-8-inch) build platform.

The Solidoodle 2 Pro is nothing if not sturdy. Its open, nearly cubical steel frame, 11.5 by 11.75 by 11.75 inches (HWD), is built to last. The company says the frame can support the weight of a 200-pound man even while printing (no, we did not test this). Its build area is up to 6 by 6 by 6 inches, slightly larger than the 3D Systems Cube 3D Printer, with a build area of 5.5 inches in each dimension.

Put on a shirt! 7 weird 'Bachelorette' arrivals

TV

Desiree Hartsock met the 25 men who will compete for her hand Monday night on "The Bachelorette." And a lot of them were desperate to make an impression -- or maybe just desperate. There were some pretty oddball arrivals this season -- some good, some bad, and some ugly. Here are just a few.

IMAGE: Bachelorette

ABC

Desiree Hartsock had to keep an open mind on Monday's "Bachelorette" as the weird arrivals just kept coming.

1. Zak W. goes shirtless
Opening with your strongest point is good, and if your strongest point is your abs, well, open with those. Or so Zak W. thought, exiting the limo shirtless and studly. "Did you forget something?" a stunned Desiree asked. "Will you accept these abs?" he responded. Whoa, let's get to know something less intimate first. Maybe an elbow. But it worked--and he even stripped down to his skivvies later when cannonballing into the pool.

2. Jonathan's Fantasy Suite invitation
The creepiest vibe came from lawyer Jonathan, who handed Desiree an envelope mimicking the "fantasy suite" invitations that always come later in the season. Surprise surprise, she wasn't ready to ditch the show and run off to sleep with a man she'd just met. "I'm not that kind of girl," she weakly joked -- and Jonathan seemed stunned that she wasn't, continuing to push the issue until he was sent home.

3. Ben brings his son
Before Ben exited the limo, his 3-year-old son Brody toddled out with a flower for Desiree. "This is my everything," Ben explained, saying he wanted her to know his son because he was such an important part of his life. Desiree seemed dazzled, but Ben was definitely walking a fine line here -- he could have been seen as using his son. Lucky for him, things went well, and he received the first rose.

4. Kasey speaks in hashtags
OK, Kasey, we get it. You work with social media. Who doesn't these days? Telling Desiree the hashtags that were used to describe her on Twitter was a little strange, even though they were positive ones like #theperfectbachelorette. And then to keep up speaking in hashtags all night? #reallyweirdguy #canyousayloser?

5. Larry dips her
ER doctor Larry thought he'd teach Desiree a dance move and swirled her around for a low dip. Yikes! She caught her silver evening gown and seemed more flustered than flattered about the impromptu Arthur Murray class. No surprise that he danced on outta there early.

6, Diogo dresses in a suit of armor
Sure, all the guys want to be seen as Desiree's knight in shining armor, but wearing a suit of armor maybe sounded better than it came off. Diogo clunked like a robot and had to take off the helmet to even see Desiree. "Welcome to Medieval Times," hooted one of the other bachelors when Sir Bad Idea clanked into the room.

7. Brandon roars up on a motorcycle
Admit it, motorcycles are hot, and Brandon made quite the entrance when he eschewed the limo and roared up on a bike instead. He even wore a helmet, for safety and mystery's sake.

Kardashian baby gender revealed ... on Sunday

TV

So -- is Kim Kardashian having a boy, or a girl? "Keeping Up With the Kardashians'" Khloe Kardashian is not telling, though she seemed sorely tempted to when she sat down with TODAY's Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie on Wednesday.

"I will say this Sunday we are going to reveal it," she said. "We find out the sex of the baby on the show."

And she offered up a tease to go along with that: The invitation to Kim's baby shower. Lauer held up the small white container that was the invite, then opened it to reveal a music box with a spinning ballerina inside; the lullaby playing, said Khloe, was written by baby's father, Kanye West.

But don't get all worked up that this confirms the couple is having a little girl. "Kim loves ballerinas," said Khloe. "Kim likes what she likes."

"Keeping Up With the Kardashians" begins its eighth season this Sunday, June 2, on E!

Where, apparently much will be revealed.

Threatening letters sent to New York mayor may contain ricin: police

By Edith Honan and Chris Francescani

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Two anonymous letters addressed to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and his gun control group contained material believed to be the potentially deadly poison ricin, and referenced the debate on gun laws, police said on Wednesday.

The New York Police Department said initial tests on the two letters, opened in New York on Friday and in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, indicated the presence of ricin.

"In both letters the content was identical," police spokesman Paul Browne said, adding that the packages contained "an oily substance" that was a pink or orange hue. "One letter was addressed to the mayor personally."

Emergency workers who came in contact with the letters initially showed minor symptoms of ricin exposure, police said. Those symptoms have since abated. Civilian personnel in New York and Washington who came in contact with the opened letters showed no symptoms of ricin exposure.

The Washington letter was opened by Mark Glaze, the director of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a group founded by Bloomberg that lobbies for stricter gun laws. The other letter was opened at a mail facility in Manhattan.

Both contained threats against Bloomberg and mentioned the gun debate, police said in a statement.

Bloomberg said he did not feel either threatened or angry by the letters and that they would not affect his work on gun control.

"In terms of why they've done it, I don't know. The letter ... obviously referred to our anti-gun efforts, but there's 12,000 people that are going to get killed this year with guns and 19,000 that are going to commit suicide with guns, and we're not going to walk away from those efforts," he said in remarks released by his press office.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns was founded in 2006, but the group's profile has been raised since the December 14 shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, that killed 20 children and six adults.

After that shooting, the group campaigned for bills that would expand the use of background checks for gun purchases and ban assault weapons, though both of those efforts were unsuccessful.

The discovery of the letters comes just weeks after ricin-tainted letters were mailed to President Barack Obama and other government officials. James Everett Dutschke, 41, a martial arts instructor, was arrested in Tupelo, Mississippi, on April 27 on suspicion of mailing those letters.

Browne said previous letters sent to the mayor have tested positive for anthrax, though in most cases letters "with threats implying it was anthrax or ricin" contained only baking soda.

The FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force and the NYPD Intelligence Division were investigating the incident.

Ricin is a lethal poison found naturally in castor beans, but it takes a deliberate act to convert it into a biological weapon. Ricin can cause death within 36 to 72 hours from exposure to an amount as small as a pinhead. No known antidote exists.

Researchers identify novel class of drugs for prostate cancers

Researchers identify novel class of drugs for prostate cancers [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 28-May-2013

DALLAS May 28, 2013 A new study on prostate cancer describes a novel class of drugs developed by UT Southwestern Medical Center researchers that interrupts critical signaling needed for prostate cancer cells to grow.

In men with advanced prostate cancer, growth of cancer cells depends on androgen receptor signaling, which is driven by androgens, such as testosterone. To thwart tumor growth, most patients with advanced prostate cancer receive drugs that block the production of androgen or block the receptor where the androgen binds. Unfortunately, such treatments invariably fail and patients die of prostate cancer with their androgen receptor signaling still active and still promoting tumor growth.

In the new study, available online at Nature Communications, a team of researchers led by Dr. Ganesh Raj, associate professor of urology at UT Southwestern, found that they could disrupt androgen receptor signaling using a novel class of drugs called peptidomimetics. This therapeutic agent consists of an engineered small protein-like chain designed to mimic peptides that are critical for androgen receptor function. The peptidomimetic agents block the activity of the androgen receptor even in the presence of androgen by attacking the protein in a different spot from where the androgen binds.

"We are hopeful that this novel class of drugs will shut down androgen receptor signaling and lead to added options and increased longevity for men with advanced prostate cancer," said Dr. Raj, the senior author of the study.

Dr. Raj compared the action that takes place to a lock and key mechanism. In prostate cancer, the androgen receptor (lock) is activated by the androgen (key) resulting in a signal that causes prostate cancer proliferation. In advanced prostate cancer, despite drugs targeting either the lock (androgen receptor) or the key (androgen production), there can be aberrant keys that open the lock or mutated locks that are always open, resulting in cancer cell proliferation. Instead of trying to block the lock or the key, peptidomimetics uncouple the lock and key mechanism from the proliferation signal. Thus, even with the androgen receptor activated, the prostate cancer cells do not receive the signal to proliferate and do not grow.

The researchers tested their drug in mouse and human tissue models. The novel drug proved non-toxic and prevented androgen receptor signaling in cancer cells. The response is highly promising and suggests that peptidomimetic targeting of prostate cancer may be a viable therapeutic approach for men with advanced disease.

Further testing is needed before a drug could move to Phase 1 clinical trials that involve human participants.

"Most drugs now available to treat advanced prostate cancer improve survival rates by three or four months," Dr. Raj said. "Our new agents may offer hope for men who fail with the current drugs."

These findings represent the development of a first-in-class agent targeting critical interactions between proteins. Other cellular and disease processes eventually could also be targeted with peptidomimetics, the scientists said.

Sources claim HTC One Google Edition to land in limited Quantities

Google Edition HTC One
Google Edition devices are starting look like the next trend that manufacturers will be shooting for. We all saw the Google Edition Galaxy S4 at Google I/O. While many weren?t to excited about the $650 price tag that was attached to it, the device does have a place in the world. It offers Android users and lovers another device that stock without the need to root, hack or mod their carrier branded version. It also allows Google to push updates out directly to the devices as well. Cutting out that delay between releases, manufacturer branding and carrier branding injections. ?Rumors started flying around at that time that HTC would be producing a Google Edition HTC One as well. Apparently a well-known source has tipped off Pocket-Lint with some more details.

While the source didn?t offer up any particulars, like a date or price point, they did offer up some info on how many will likely be available. Stating that the current plan is for about 1% Google Edition devices of the total HTC One sales numbers. Talks put the HTC One at selling around 5 million units to date, so doing some math puts that at around 50,000 HTC One Google Edition devices to be produced and sold.

We can think of a handful of people who would love to get their hands on a Google Edition HTC One, but we aren?t sure how well this will all play out. Is it worth the money to get a Google Edition device that isn?t a Nexus? Is this all just live field trial to see if it generates enough interest for Google to and the OEMs to start putting out various stock Android devices for users to choose from? I remember a rumor sometime last year that the Nexus 4 wouldn?t be the only Nexus phone released. Turned out to be the tablet line of course. I would love to see each manufacturer work with Google to bring a stock experience of each of their flagship devices to the Play Store, so long as the pricing came down a bit.

Other talks say we should have an announcement about this phone in just a week or so. Seemingly being confirmed by plenty of notable tech enthusiasts such as Russel Holly,?Paul O?Brien?and?@LlabTooFeR.?Will you be hovering over the Play Store, or where ever it might be sold, hitting F5 to be one of the elite owners?
