Rumor: New Nexus tablet to have higher resolution display than iPad

4 hrs.

Lately rumors are a penny a dozen when it comes to Google's Nexus phone and tablet lineup, but one in particular certainly caught our attention: An analyst claims that the next Nexus tablet will be a 10.1-inch beast with a higher resolution display than the current iPad model.

According to CNET's Brooke Crothers, Richard Shim, an analyst at NPD DisplaySearch,?says that the pixel density on Google's next tablet will leave that of the "Retina" display found on the third-generation 9.7-inch iPad in the dust.

This new Nexus tablet, apparently?built by Samsung, would have a?2,560?x?1,600 pixel?display with a resolution of 299 pixels per inch (PPI), according to Shim.?The iPad, in comparison, has a 2048 x 1536 pixel display with a resolution of 264 PPI.

(Both?Samsung and Apple have?phones with higher pixel densities than this, of course. The iPhone 5 screen has a 326 PPI, while the Galaxy S III offers 306 PPI.)?

Shim told CNET that the new Nexus tablet will be a "high-end device," so think $400 or $500,?rather than?the ?sub-$200 range of the Nexus 7 and the rumored $99 Google?tablet. Samsung, which already builds Google's current Galaxy Nexus smartphone, makes sense as the choice of partner.?

Shim bases all of his assumption on "supply chain indications," which, as we've learned in the past, are subject to change ??or occasionally totally wrong. So take all of these details with a hefty serving of salt until there's some sort of official confirmation or announcement from the folks at Google themselves.
