Microsoft releases enterprise preview of Windows 8.1

SOFTWARE REDEVELOPER Microsoft has released a preview of Windows 8.1 Enterprise that includes Virtual Desktop Infrastructure and the ability for administrators to control the Start Screen.

Microsoft's Windows 8 received a frosty reception mostly due to the firm's insistence on pushing its tiled interface and doing away with the Start button, so the firm has said that there will be a Start button and users can boot to the desktop in Windows 8.1. ?

Now Microsoft has released an enterprise preview of Windows 8.1 that not only includes those features but allows administrators to control the Start Screen, Virtual Desktop Infrastructure and restrictions on what applications and files the user has access to through an App Locker.

Microsoft had already released a developer preview of Windows 8.1, however this time around the firm is trying to whet enterprise appetites with a number of features that should please system administrators. The firm said its Start Screen control will allow administrators to control how the Start Screen appears and prevent users from customising it.

Microsoft has also improved its Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, which supports 3D graphics and devices with touchscreens, thanks to the firm's Windows Server 2012 operating system. Microsoft added that internal Windows applications can be sideloaded on PCs and tablets with the upcoming operating system update.

Microsoft needs to please large businesses with Windows 8.1 and judging by the feature list the firm is touting in the preview release, it is trying very hard to win back lost ground from last year's Windows 8 launch. Microsoft said Windows 8 users will have two years to upgrade to Windows 8.1 after it becomes available, with the firm saying that it will be released to manufacturing in August. ?
